I have had large tonsils for awhile now, I want them out. Ever time I get allergys or a small cold I can barley breath. I went to my doctor 02/06/07 now keep in mind I have not been to a doctor in almost 3 years. This was my first visit since I had moved to FL. I told him that I wanted them removed ASAP he took one look at them and said"We don't usally remove your tonsils unless they are a severe problem". Now I think me having trouble breathing is a pretty good reason to remove them whats your opinions? should I look for a new doctor? Or is their a certain place I can go that deals with this kind of thing. I just want them removed.

I had strep throat 4 times in 2 months and saw an ENT doctor. I am getting my tonsils out in April. If you have a bad enough problem with them, the doctor will remove them. I was told by my doctor that I will just keep getting sick. Being in bed for 4 days with strep the one time and 2 days with another round of it was enough for me. Also, I was put on steroids for 5 days to totally kill it. Am I better, yes, but that drastic measure was not pleasant. It makes you feel all jittery and weird like you are tripping on something. I can't wait to get these out. Should have done it years ago. Get a second opinion from another ENT if you aren't happy with the first guy. There are doctors out there that will help you if you have trouble breathing and getting sick. Your body has other methods of fighting infection and you do not need you tonsils.
BTW-I know plenty of people who got their tonsils out and they all say the same thing...you will never get another sore throat again like when they were there.

Sweet pea

Enlarged tonsils or tonsilitis can be contolled with medication, specific antiobiotics and a dental check.
It has been deemed wrong to do tonsilectomies for quite some time (Australia) Mainly because the common old tonsils are part of Waldehyers Ring. Which is related to the immunity system. Remving tonsils is now thought to weaken the immunity system.
I suggets you consult with an ENT surgeon and as well your dentist to check that your teeh are not the basic cause of reinfection. If you can keep yoor tonsila all the better to fight off nast bugs. They are essential little organs
