An islamist is a person who reads and understands both the Holy Koran and the Sunnah and practise it precisely, just as the prophet Mohammad (SAW) did, during his time.

A muslim on the other hand is just someone who "thinks" he is an islamist, doesn't understand the Koran, its meaning, they just go by their daily activities, doing what every other muslim is doing. They merely listen to their imams and sort of go with the masses. What everyone do, they do. What everyone does not do, they don't do.
