If you buy Guild Wars ("Prophecies", the first game) you get six classes:
- Warrior: Melee, using Sword (damage to single enemy,) Axe (damage to multiple enemies) or Hammer (damage and interrupt single enemy.) Heaviest armor, so warriors are the tanks.
- Monk: Healing, Protection (damage prevention) and Smiting (damage-dealing.)
- Elementallist: Mainly damage-dealing, but can also slow enemies, interrupt them, or protect against them.
- Ranger: Extraordinarily versatile. Damage, can poison people, interrupt, damage single or multiple enemies, control an animal pet, set traps that damage or cripple enemies
- Necromancer: Extraordinarily versatlie. Blood magic for self-healing, Curses for damage-dealing, degeneration and turning enemy actions against themselves, Death magic for raising armies of the undead from corpses of fallen foes.
- Mesmer: Interrupt spellcasters, steal energy, degenerate HP.

And with Prophecies you get the following:
- Continent of Tyria with quests, storyline
- Access to the Battle Isles, for PVP play
- Access to the Realms of the Gods (Underworld, Fissure of Woe)

If you buy FACTIONS you get the six classes from Prophecies, plus two more:
- Assassin: Melee fighter with lots of critical damage, short-range teleportation, hexes to disable enemies
- Ritualist: Spellcaster who can heal, do damage with a unique set of enchantments (called "weapon spells") and summon spirits who heal, protect, do damage.

With FACTIONS you also get:
- Access to the continent of Cantha, with its quests and storyline
- Access to the Battle Isles
- Access to the Realms of the Gods

With NIGHTFALL you get the six classes from Prophecies, plus two more:
- Paragon: Ranged fighter who uses a spear for damage, and has a set of shouts, chants and songs which buff allies and tend to get more powerful the larger the group you are part of
- Dervish: Melee fighter who uses a scythe to damage multiple enemies, plus a set of enchantments which help the dervish and damage nearby enemies during combat

With NIGHTFALL you also get:
- Access to the continent of Elona and all its quests and storyline
- Access to the Battle Isles
- Access to the Realms of the Gods

So if you want access to all classes, you have to buy at least Factions and Nightfall. If you want access to all three continents, you have to buy all three games.

Each set has a separate area to explore and missions to do. the latest version will let you choose from any of the 8 available characters in nightfall, but you will only be able to explore the nightfall area, to take your characters to the other areas, you will need the other versions. As far as the skill sets you will only be able to learn skills and spells that are available in that edition, some of the skills will be the same as the other versions but you will not be able to get all the skills.

both are solid video games and it is as a lot as you. in case you want to watch for Guild Wars 2, it is completely effective and it is stand on my own. in case you want getting to attraction to close about the lore and are attracted to seeing the way it replaced, then through all means get Guild Wars. i trust GameStop has the completed decision of all 3 campaigns and the interest of the North boom for type of $30. in case you do opt for to get the unique, the time you spend there basically isn't in ineffective. There are achievements you earn in the unique that translate over into impressive extras in GW2, provided you've a minimum of one marketing campaign and the interest of the North boom. ArenaNet has suggested emphatically they are going to proceed to help the unique recreation as long as there are people taking area in it. besides the undeniable fact that you opt for, you fairly can not bypass incorrect.
