The limbic system is the group of cellular structures located between the brainstem and the cortex.It evolved sometime between three hundred and two hundred million years ago.Because the limbic system is most highly developed in mammals,it is often called the mammalian brain.In addition to helping maintain body temperature,blood pressure,heartbeat rate,and blood sugar levels,the limbic system also is strongly involved in the emotional reactions that have to do with survival.
