I have a gloden retriever that just had nine puppies. Two boys and seven girls!!! They are all healthy and fine, but is it true some breeders charge more for females?

Yes. Females can reproduce and bring money to the purchaser. Anyone who charges more for females is doing that as a means of income rather than improving the breed. A reputable breeder has one price for males and females - and it's usually very high for quality animals.

As soon as your puppies are weaned, have your dog spayed and leave the breeding of dogs to the folks who are making every effort to improve the breed and are serious show dog people. Show dog people generally only breed their puppies when they have a waiting list - and hefty deposits for - every puppy long before the female is ever bred. Those people on the waiting list don't usually care if the puppy they get is male or female, as long as it is an exceptional specimen of the breed.

When people show an interest only in a female, refuse to sell them one. They are looking for a way to make money at the expense of the animal.

It always amazes me when people (backyard breeders, sorry, but that's what you are) sell their female pups for more money when: 1. they sell them without any regard to the breed standard & do absolutley NO genetic testing on their stock & don't care (Golden Retrievers have tons of genetic problems , by the way) 2. selling them with no sales contract or spay/neuter agreement, something that RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS OF PUREBRED DOGS DO WITHOUT FAIL, because they don't want them bred, as they are sold as "pet quality". Also, their reputation depends on it!!! A dedicated, purebred dog breeder spends YEARS, & I mean YEARS, studying their chosen breed's background, ancestors & pedigree & all the while ,determined to eliminate every know inherited problem from their stock! They know their bloodlines inside & out & can tell you what to expect from every pup they sell in terms of health, temperament & growth!. 3. Some of these "defects' from backyard breeders' dogs, sometimes might not show up until the dog matures & at that point, it's too late for the unsuspecting buyer to do anything more than pay exhorbitant Vet fees! Do you know anything about your dog's background? Probably not...& I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT THIS IS NOT THE ADVICE YOU WANTED TO HEAR & WILL NOT PICK MY ANSWER AS THE BEST ONE,& I DON'T CARE! I am also sure you have dollar signs in your eyes & will sell your poor little girs for more money than the boys. and figure..."hey, this is easy, let's do it again".. Oh, and by the way, breeding & exhibiting purebred dogs is NOT a profit making business. most of the money goes into vet care for the dam (the mom) stud fees, housing, food, puppy care, shots, health check-ups genetic testing, entry fees for shows, gas money, hotel fees, advertising and if you happen to be a little unlucky in whelping, you might need an emergency C-section (1000 +) or the dam might die & then you have to hand raise & feed all those pups (a 24/7 job for at least 3 weeks) or worse, some or all the pups die! Good dog breeding is rewarding & heartbreaking at the same time....YOU DON'T EVEN COME CLOSE. Get your female spayed if you care at all about dogs!

I really don't think you guys have any right calling everyone that breed dogs backyard breeders. Every time anyone mention something about puppies you all right away become judge, and jury. You don't have a right to say anything until you go to their home and see for yourself what they do. Only then you have a right to say something. I don't get it. How can anyone say anything about anyone until they see it for them self.

Any way to answer your question..Yes breeders do sale females for more. Mine are fur babies. I charge the same price for both male and female. I think they do that because people will pay more for a female because she can have puppies. I really do think all puppies should be the same price.

And for anyone interested I am not a backyard breeder. You are always welcome to come and check me out, but until then don't call me a backyard breeder.

I have to add this...For all that yells about backyard breeders all the time..with no just cause...You become a breeder yourself. Put your self in our place for a while.

its true but its not justified
most GOOD breeders charge more for dogs who are higher quality comformation wise, so if a puppy has no chance of being a champion, is cryptorchid, has an underbite etc, they charge less than those comforming to the standard who could be shown.

im not going to preach about spaying, but if you are trying at all to be an ethical breeder, youll pediactricly spay and nueter your puppies before sending them home

yes, but its not always right. the thought is that someone will make more money off the female than a male so youshould be able to get more.the lady i got my dog from always said a good male can be studded out more times than a female can have pups(healthly)she charged two prices on her dogs. show quality and pets. pets came with either limited registration or they had to be spayed and would get some money back. dgs should be breed to improve th breed not to make money

Responsible, reputable breeders do not ever sell females for more then males..they charge the same price regardless of sex.

ACA is American Canine Association..a dog registered there COULD be a part bred..as they are not AKC UKC or CKC registered..unfortunately there are alot of gullible people and they are the ones paying more for a mix than a purebred..as for your $200 dog you better breed it to another $200 dog

Even if they do, you're not a breeder so you should just give those pups away for free. You can't gaurantee potential owners anything regarding health or temperament without having champion bloodlines that have been tested for such.

What exactly would you be charging for?

Dogs are NOT easy money. Please spay your *****.

Not everyone Does! Some Do because they think they will be used to produce more of the same pups.????I love the male pups equally as much as the female so I personally would not want to pay more just for a female if I only wanted a pet.

well because after thay have a baby then you have more puppies and you did not have to pay for them. See if you would eant to sell the babies and keep one you get more money and still have a puppy. Get it
