An indulgence something that is expensive and not necessary for your life. Money to support a church is money given to the church of your choice, so they can send it to people and places that are in need of it, have a house for a pastor, minister, priest, leader(or whoever) to lead the church, to pay for a church building and all the bills that must be paid to have this building(electricity, water, taxes, etc.). I believe the difference is self explanatory.

+ Purgatory +

To discuss indulgences, first we have to talk about Purgation (or Purgatory).

Are you perfect now? Most people would say no.

Will you be perfect in heaven? Most people believe yes.

Purgatory (or purgation) is the process of God's love changing our imperfect selves into perfect beings. Depending on the amount of change needed by different people this can be an easy or slightly harder process.

Everyone in purgatory is on their way to heaven. I don't think Mother Teresa of Calcutta had a very hard time of it.

+ Indulgences +

The concept is that a person can do acts of penance now on earth to make purgation easier.

Penance is internally turning one's heart toward God and away from sin in hope in divine mercy and externally by fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.

A corruption grew in the Church many years ago where rich people would give enough alms (money to the Church) to essentially buy an easy way to heaven. This was one of Martin Luther's protests (hence Protestants) and shortly thereafter the Catholic Church cleaned up this practice.

In 1567 Pope Pius V canceled all grants of indulgences involving any fees or other financial transactions.

But remember because everyone in purgatory is already on their way to heaven, indulgences do not get you into heaven. They just make purgation easier.

I guess if you did not believe in purgatory then there would be no reason to worry about indulgences.

With love in Christ.

During a conversation with a young Roman Catholic woman the subject of saying masses for the dead came up. She told me that her daughter's boyfriends dead mother's anniversary (of her death) had come round and he was concerned to have a Mass said for her. On arriving at the Church he intended giving the priest €25 for the Mass to be said. However, he realized he should have put the money in an envelope, which he did not have. In the Church he met his uncle (his late mother's brother). So he asked his uncle if he could put the €25 in his envelope. When his uncle saw that he had a donation of €25, he remarked, is that all your mother's worth! His uncle's donation to the priest was €100.
This begs the question, how much are human beings worth when they are dead? (1) It seems they are worth much to the Roman priest who gladly accepts the money
(2) The uncle assumes that much money will release the dead relative earlier from 'Purgatory' and assume a place in Heaven. The young man naturally grieves for his mother and cannot bear to think of his dead mother in any other place but Heaven. But because he was brain-washed into a superstitious religion, which is promoted by the Roman priest and subsequently his uncle (who was also brain-washed as a child) he has doubts and to quell these doubts he parts with his money "just in case"!
And so this charade and fraudulent doctrine of Purgatory invented by the Roman Catholic Cult continues to thrive and makes a mockery of the love of God and Saviour Jesus Christ. What Almighty God offers freely in Jesus Christ Roman Catholicism demands a price. Purgatory is in the priest's pocket
This is a true and recent statement from where I live in Ireland

If you go to a Kennedy attended church in Massachusetts, there is so much power, they control local politics. If it is an Alabama church, they get candles donated by the local Walmart. Rich people are welcome at the Alabama churches. But the poor are blocked from entering the Kennedy church. There are a lot of Kennedy churches and nothing is left to chance. They even assure the rich people always get new carpets. The old carpets are shipped to Alabama. Of course Walmart halls the carpet free of charge.
