Sulfur dioxide and other oxides of sulfur are produced when fuels like oil and coal which contain sulfur are burnt for producing electricity. That combustion creates the SOx gas that can be caught in the winds and carried across the country to result in acid rain far from the power plant itself. In an attempt to minimize this effect, expensive sulfur-scrubbing emissions control equipment is added to the plants, raising their operating cost and the price of the electricity they produce. One other approach is to use more expensive low-sulfur oil and pretreated coal which are free from those potential sulfur contaminants, which then also raises the price of the electricity.

Sulfur Monoxide (SO) - occurs naturally in space
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) - produced by volcanic activity as well a industrial processes (combustion of coal and petroleum)
Sulfur Trioxide (SO3) - produced when sulfur dioxide comes in contact with water... result is acid rain.

Fossil fuels have various amoumts of sulfur in them. When they are burned, the sulfur turns into sulfur dioxide.

The sulfur can be refined out of petrolium and sulfur dioxide can be removed from factory exhaust by "scrubbing"
