So, last Friday, I went to my doctor because of some erratic pain in my bladder area. I had a UA done and it showed blood in the urine and leukocytes (white blood cells)...signals infection. I was prescribed Bactrim on Friday, and am about to take my last dose tonight. I am still feeling a little bit of pain where I had been last week....What's up with this? :(

It could be that the organism causing the infection is not susceptible to Bactrim. You should return to the doctor and have a urine culture and sensitvity test done (they see what specific bacteria grow out of the urine, and which antibiotics kill those bacteria).

You may need a different antibiotic.

Also, ask for Pyridium, if you didn't get it already. It gets rid of the pain (but turns your urine bright orange).

The resistance to Bactrim in increasing greatly. right now (in my area) bactrim is only about 50% effective in UTI's. Definitely make another appointment, the next step up is Cipro 250mg twice daily for 5-7 days. As far as the Pyridium for the pain, if you need some before your appointment, over the counter AZO standard is the same thing.

is this the first time you have urinary tract infection (UTI)??

if the pain continous i would go see a doctor , cos normaly for a bacteria infection, its just prescribing an antibiotic drug and it all should be fine!

the drug u seem to be taking should do the job, if the pain continous i would go see ure doctor again,
but dont worry, :), i know its a bit scary the pain being there and such but it will pass.

just go see ure doc, do u have any Pus or blood in the urine? a fever??
do u feel any better after taking the medication?? if u have then its working :D, and i woudnt worry.
but if the pain continous after the medication is over ...... then i would see ure doc, and dont worry he will just change your medication and it should be fine :P. hehe as the Dr says they might need to cultivate ure urine, which just means u give them ure urine and in a couple of days they will know what type of bacteria you have and then give u the correct medication, :D,

take care and no need to be worried. :)

Usually Bactrim is quite good for bladder infections.... and you can help it with, believe it or not, cranberry juice for a few days. It changes the pH of the urine in the bladder that inhibits the growth of bacteria... and for future reference, reduce your changes of further bladder infections by wiping from front to rear, never the other way, and by making sure your genital area is clean before sex.

I am a pharmacist and see this fairly often. It may be that your infection is resistant to the Bactrim. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic but there are other drugs that may be indicated. Give it a couple days, and if you don't feel better taking Tylenol give your doctor a call.
