Peritonium is the lining around the visceral organs within the abdominal cavity. Any inflammation from within ie visceral organs ; or from without ie external may lead to rapid spread of infection of the peritonium. Most common from within are the result of burst Appendix, Typhoid perforation. From outside is a penetrating injury that punctures the peritoneal lining and exposes it to external atmospheric polution.

It is an inflamation of the lining of the inside of the body cavity where the organs are. The lining is called the peritoneum and the itis part means inflamation.
