I taught him how to come which is very simple. I don't know how he learned this. I didn't really train him, I don't even know how it started. o__O I just hold out my fingers low, so he can see it and then click my tongue and wiggle my fingers a bit, and tell him to come in a soft voice. He always comes.

I also taught him to sit, and it was pretty easy. First, I just let him sniff a treat, and he'll lick it for a while, then I put it above his head a bit, and I make sure that he sees it. Then your cat should sit down. Now he does it even without the treat. =)

I know a book where you can teach your cats treat in like 5 minutes but I forgot what it's called. It's VERY helpful.

1)How to fetch: find a toy they really like. Throw it. Many cats will bring it back the first time. Then pet them, say good cat, etc. Then throw the toy again. Most cats will realize that if they fetch it, you will throw it again. Make sure it is a toy they can carry in their mouth. So far I have had three different cats fetch: a toy bebe from a toy bebe gun (Circa 1968), my mothers' curler, and the latest cat fetches the round red plastic torn from a plastic milk container.
2)How to sit: When your cat wants to do something special, like go outside, eat a treat, etc, say, "sit (say cats name)." After a while many cats will realize what you want, and then will sit. Once they do so, open the door to let them out, give them the treat, etc. So far this has been successful with two cats.
3)When either one of my cats is doing something wrong, scratching the couch, etc., I say, in a stern voice, "Walk away please! Walk away please!" I repeat this until they stop doing the wrong thing. Then I say, "Thank You," in a more pleasant voice. Note: make sure you do not say your cats name when reprimanding them. A cats' name should be used to call them or to praise them. Also do not reward them when you get them to stop doing something wrong. This might cause your cat to do a wrong thing, and then stop it in order to get a reward.

Most of all, have fun with your cats, and they will have fun with you.

Not a trick, exactly, but it took me less than a week to train my cat to use the toilet instead of her litter box. I saw an article in Prevention magazine, followed the instructions & she no longer needs a litter box. Amazing...

Come when called.
"Kiss"- younger cat headbutts me with forehead for kiss
"Kittykiss" older cat rubs my cheek and nips my chin
"Bite"- means he will bite whoever is petting him (this was fun when the kids were small..)
Lay down.
Go outside.
"Get the kitty!" he will attack the other kitty and wrestle.
"In the house" - so we can get out when they are trying to escape- they will walk away from the door and let us go out.
"second breakfast"= come for dinner.
"Cover game!"- cat will dive under the comforter to play and then you have to let him attack you. Game is over when one of you is bleeding and it's never the cat. It's his favourite game.
My favourite- my son taught the older cat to leap 4 feet when he wiggled his fingers. We never tired of it. He's too old and arthritic to do it now but if you wiggle fingers he'll twitch.

I've been a Cat parent for all of my life. The best & toughest trick is to teach them to come to you on demand. I've been able to teach every cat I've raise to come to me when I want them. Very hard to do, but I have a ton of respect to anybody who can do the same.

What become the trick?. it incredibly is unusual to instruct cats tricks. you could instruct them "behaviors". Our cats continually line up of their feeding spots on each and every occasion they pay attention or see us commencing a can of cat foodstuff. At nite, whilst we are settled in mattress, I snap my arms and that all of them come bounce up on our mattress, and cuddle with goodnight gestures, rubs, and kisses. Then they bypass off and do their night-time stuff. in case you ever bypass to Sea international Orlando, be confident to attend the "Pets Ahoy" tutor. This production is stay with a number of experienced cats perofrming all varieties of stunts, tricks, and "behaviors" of direction, all of us incredibly comprehend that our cats are the "running shoes" and we are those they have doing tricks for them...smile

Our new kitten plays fetch. She taught herself. She could do it for hours. She will even play "alternate fetch" between 2 people in 2 different rooms and remember who last threw the object and bring it to the next person. She brought me my slipper yesterday.

She will stand up on her hind legs, it just seems natural for her.

I did teach her to come to my whistle (to use in an emergency situation). If she is where she can see me, she will also come to me if I motion for her over to me (in a "ciao" gesture). My husband cannot whistle so he gave up and just gets her to come by shaking a noisy bag of treats. I taught her to sit (that took around 10 minutes). She will sit up ("sit pretty") on her hind legs and hit toys as I toss them to her.

To get her to come, I started with treats are rewards and then slowly stopped giving them. She is so excited to try and please us, we don't seem to need treats to get her to try new tricks.

But she will do anything for a toy (but then anything can be a toy). She loves the trash. Some of her favorite "toys" are the rings that come off of milk jugs when you pull off the tab and plastic ring that proves your milk has not been tampered with. But her most favorite "toys" are those plastic shrink-wrapped sheets that cover the necks of bottles that (again) proves that your salad dressing or medication or anything, has not been tampered with. These rounded pieces are fantastic because kittens seem to love crinkly things (I noticed that the pet stores sell crinkly toys nowadays, especially for teething kittens). And they are light. She will carry them and fetch them and toss them in the air for weeks.

I would like to know how to train her to do other tricks like roll over and lay down. Sounds like you all have a lot of fun with your cats that know tricks. We have only had her a short time but she seems so smart we cannot wait to see what else she can learn.

My cat used to fetch film cannisters (once the 35mm film was taken out) and now she fetches small wadded up pieces of paper. I buy her cat toys, but she always brings me the pieces of paper to throw for her to fetch!
