Many people seem to use this forum to mock and attack religion and spirituality rather to explore and understand it. Why not go to churches, temples, mosques, and synagogues to do that? Is it because they would lose their anonymity and their courage and audacity along with it? If these people like questioning religious people so much, why shouldn't they go where they can find the highest concentration of them?

That's why we're on Yahoo! Answers - there's a pretty high concentration here, and I don't have to get up early on Sunday.

More seriously, a lot of people WENT to church, religiously as it were, and have found it lacking.

I've always felt that there was an element of self-congratulation to being at church: Aren't we special, we're the elect, hooray us, oh yeah, and hooray God too. It's literally preaching to the choir.

I mock religion; I mock almost everything. I find sacred cows to be thin on the ground. But I don't think I attack it as such.

Sometimes, even amidst seeming mockery, people might be harboring actual questions. Here, we do have a certain amount of anonymity, and because of that, we're likely to feel more bold. That can be a good thing, though. People who will probably never set foot in a church can read answers here and learn something, just as religious people can learn more about atheism and other viewpoints. Personally, I don't have a problem with people whose views are different from my own.

As far as I understand, R&S is not a designated place of worship. I would never go to someone's church, temple, etc and be disrespectful of their beliefs. A public forum, however, is a different story. Everyone is free to exchange opinions, and sometimes people express some pretty harsh opinions. Its a risk you take if you're interested in sharing thoughts and ideas.

Did that for 30+ years before wising up. Now I have Sundays free, don't have to sit in uncomfortable seats, get incensed, listen to oral diarrhea spouting from a person out of touch with reality, waste money and time, and kneel down on bad knees.

This is a silly forum where it's OK to say pretty much anything.

Most of the people here have manners....we wouldn't go into someones home and criticize their choice of decor....why in the world would it be OK to do that in a person's place of worship.

Think.

Many of them did. I was a Christian for 40 years before becoming an atheist.

They do and have. Many atheist or agnostic people started out going to church and then converted over.

Because there's nothing in there that I want.

In this society, there are religious people EVERYwhere.
