I always advise against cropping ears, the procedure is extremely painful for the dog and causes permanent and irreversible damage to the external ear. Pit bulls have no AKC "breed standard" that would require this mutilation for any showing purposes. Please do not have your puppy put under anesthesia and have an expensive and very painful and possibly damaging procedure done simply to make the dog look tough.

Raising a puppy, especially a pit bull type dog requires calm Patience and firm but gentle leadership from your end. It is vital to take your dog for a long walk, preferably twice daily, every day. make sure she heals and walks beside you like a friend. Give her strict rules such as no rushing out the door ahead of you, no growling when you take a toy or food away from her, no jumping on people.

please remember your dog's needs: excessive in the form of walking together with you, leadership in the form of house rules, and love- acceptance for who your dog is, not trying to change it into what you think it should be.

a dog is first and foremost a living breathing feeling being, very much like ourselves. when we take them into our homes and our hearts we are making a commitment for the full life time of that animal to provide it with what IT (not we) needs most.

Most vets won't crop anymore because it is cruel and unnecessary. If you can find one who will do it, it will probably cost you several hundred dollars since it's a surgical procedure and will require some follow-up visits.

Usually, when dogs are cropped, either tail or ear, it's done when they are no more than 3 days old or so, before their nervous systems are developed enough for it to be as traumatic. (At least, that's what they say.) If yours is already chewing your stuff, she's far too old to undergo it without feeling serious pain throughout the long healing process.

The likelihood of infection is high. The look is ghetto. Please don't do it.

As for chewing your stuff, puppies do that. Pit bulls are one of the breeds that do it the most. The only way to keep her from chewing your stuff is to give her things she is allowed to chew, keep your stuff where she can't reach it, and crate train her so that she's contained when you can't be there to supervise her.

Make sure you find a highly recommended vet for the procedure. My vet does my Dobes for around $200. It needs to be done between 8-12 weeks old. The rolling procedures after the surgery can take up to 3 months. Your vet will roll them for the first time after the ear heals a bit. Then its 2 days on and 2 days off. If your not comfortable with the rolling procedure, you may want to pay extra to have your vet do it. Its not too hard, but if not done properly, you can "ruin" the dogs ears. The cropped ears and tails, basically came about for defense purposes, not looks. It makes the dog harder to get ahold of. Mainly done on Doberman, as for watch, police, or armed forces dogs. It is no longer required for any breed in the showring. Take your dog to basic obedience training to help with chewing and other problems. Its not actually cruel, and does promote healthier ears, but I also believe it should only be done on Dobes and for certain reasons stated before.

Don't listen to these people. It's your dog if you want to get it done then do it. We got our Pits ears cropped and it was just a little over $100, it just depends on where you go, and where you live. I don't see how it's cruel, I mean it's not like they cut the ear while their awake, they put the dog to sleep, and then do it. The after care is not hard, all you have to do is keep the medicine on the ears that the vet gives you. I think Pits look better with cropped ears. My Pits ears didn't bother him after we got his done, he was just fine. After they get a certain age though the vet won't do it, so if your going to do it, do it right away. Good luck, and don't listen to other people on here. Your dog will be fine I promise.

My personal choice would be NOT to crop the ears. While it may make a dog look "cool", there is no benefit to doing it. But if you must do it, make sure you take the dog to a qualified surgeon, and dont look for a cheap deal. Ask for references and pictures of previous surgeries. I have seen many bad crop jobs, even where it has cost the dog his ears. HAVE YOU SEEN A DOG WITH OUT EARS? Its not pretty. Also you must change the dressing frequentally, and there is NO garantee the dogs ears will stand.

that is so mean. I just bought a great dane puppy and even thought they look better with cropped ears I would never do that to him. It costs between 150 - 300 dollars and you have to tape them up anywhere from 6-12 or 18 months and they still may not stand on their own. they have to be taped every 5-7 days for that long seems like alot of apin for the little one. Don't do it. Is it really worth it? I don't think so

Please don't do that!! Haven't you ever came home to a happy dog who's ears were raised..or called a dogs name only to see their ears perk up? You won't be able to see that!! The only purpose of clipping a dog's ears is for pit fighting so the other dog can't hold onto him. Is that what you want????? Please me humane and appreciate those cute little perky ears. I assure you, the first site of facial expressions will make it worth while.

Why do you want them cropped? Even in the show ring, they are preferred to be intact. They need a LOT of aftercare and many people do it wrong. Many vets won't crop either as it is not taught in vet schools and there is so much aftercare for taping and keeping everything clean. Leaving them intact looks much better and cropping in this day and age serves no purpose.

Oh, please do not do this. It is very cruel and if you don't believe me it is actually outlawed in most countries. If you love your dog you won't do this. No matter what the financial cost to youis, thebiggest cost will be the pain for your puppy.
