I was told this by a christian today in reference to a question I asked. If this is the case, why do christians bother reading it at all? Isn't salvation the point?

It's true that it is faith in Christ that's saves us but Christian's need to read the bible to have a understanding about what they believe in and to grow spiritually. Its a guide with instructions on what God asks of us.

The Heidelberg catechism, question #2, says there are three things that you must know to live and die in the joy of this comfort (salvation) -- first, how great one's sin and misery are; second, how one is set free from all their sins and misery; and third, how one is to thank God for such deliverance. This does not necessarily require reading ability, but such concepts are mentioned anyway in the Bible and would have to be considered a way for a person to know that he or she is saved.

Since all of the concepts are mentioned in the Bible, a deeper meaning is found by being able to read the scriptures in order for spiritual maturity to occur. A person does not stay in the "infant stage" of Christianity forever.

then how does one person KNOW he is saved without the Bible?

I do not believe that answer is true.

John 1:1 The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jesus and the Word are the same. You cannot have one without the other.

Most christians do believe that this is true, and in turn this emphasizes the need to "witness." Salvation is the point, but does that mean that christians should remain uneducated in what is one of the keystones of their faith? I sure wouldn't think so.

You don't need to read or understand it to be SAVED.

You need to read it in order to grow. In order to understand Gods heart and his will. In order to move in progression, not perfection mind you.

You need to accept Jesus in your heart, repent of your sins and mean it to be saved. Salvation has already been paid for, you just have to ask for it. The Bible is the word of God and by reading you learn how to be more Christ like and God becomes real in your life.

God Bless

The point is to have a personal relationship with God. You get to know God by rreading the Bible and praying.
That said, the answer is Yes, you can go to heaven by accepting Jesus as your savior even if you can't read.

Reading the bible is good on its own , but going by it is better. You don't really have to read it to do what it's said in it, but of coarse reading it will help a lot.

Although I have read the bible from cover to cover, I am aware that it was unnecessary to get me saved. In Ephesians, it is said that we are saved by faith, not by actions.
