This man also worked in a lab, often with bacteria, and many hazardous chemicals. Could it be a poisoning, or infection of some sort?

Sounds like Pneumonia except for the puss in the eyes. Pneumonia can cause a high temp and fluid in the lungs. Along with the headaches and body aches. The sore throat could have been from coughing. May have had a really bad cold that turned into Pneumonia.
Sorry for your loss, God bless

If his temp was 101.7-F 15 minutes after he was FOUND to be deceased, he was most definitely severely febrile at TOD. Lack of prescription medication indicates no prior dx of chronic condition.

Dyspnea, pharyngitis, headache, lethargy, high fever, and purulent ocular discharge...hmmm....

With the exception of the purulent ocular discharge, that combo covers about half of the Merck Manual, although febrility is generally suggestive of systemic infection (but not nearly as much as you might think)...

This fellow needs a good post if you ever want to find out COD.

Take care,

In response to questioner's edit: That does narrow it down some. We'd want a tox screen and a Gram stain on the OP mucous in addition to the post. We'd get into cultures if that didn't wash, but I think that'd do the trick.
