America had jobs. America had religious freedom. America was hyped up in many countries as "Land of Opportunity".
1. to earn a college degree here in US. (like me)
2. Political Freedom
3. Religious Tolerance
4. Economic Opportunity - People want a better life - better job - more money
5. Political Refugees fear for their lives
6. Some want free atmosphere
7. Forced Immigration (Slavery)
8. Family Reunification
There are two types of motivation for immigration
Push(need to leave in order to survive)
Pull (attracted to new way of life)

Are they LEGAL? Great!!! We need good, law abiding people.
Are they ILLEGAL? There are absolutely NO GOOD REASON for them to be here!!!!!!! They are criminals and should be deported. We don't need they, or their anchor babies. This in not a racist issue. This is a LEGAL issue.
We have proof that we don't need them. May 1, 2006 was a (mostly) Mexican protest called "A day without an immigrant." The supporters of this protest claimed that the country would be shut down when the people didn't go to work. America would be devastated and crippled without the "immigrants." WRONG!
The freeways were clear. Business continued to function with no problems. About the only ones that had a problem were the schools that lost money when a few kids didn't show up and the businesses that support the illegal alien criminals lost money because they chose to be closed.

Most immigrants enter the US to find a better life. As most have no education, they haven't got any marketable skills. Hence, when they reach the US they have to take the most basic jobs available. Unfortunately, they also don't take advantage of any opportunities to advance themselves through adult education. This lack of respect for education is transferred to their children by actions and attitudes. That's why so many new immigrants and first generation Americans are real bad citizens these days. They just don't want to get with the program.

immigrants or illegals. like simon from American idol. he's here on a visa, but I think he will end up staying. It's just something they adapt to after sometime. I personally think that America just has freedom of speech and that is all, because with all this terrorist crap freedom is at a cost.

Are you talking about legal immigrants? The best reason is that they chose to come to the US, went through the proper channels and are now building new lives for themselves.

Well they actually came here because they needed work, they were being treated unfairly and the people they worked for didn't pay them enough. Also the great depression made them come here because they were all running out of jobs because everyone was in debt and needed a job badly.......hope this is enough =)

As part of a broad perspective, this article by Thom Hartmann gives a realistic overview of why they WILL stay here and who is behind that decision:

They have the correct documentation--ie a green card, student visa, work permit or they are seeking political asylum or citizenship via legal means.
Other than that there are no legitimate reasons for residency here.

They stay here because the pay is better, the living quarters are better, most get govt assistance, and education is better. Where I live, there are a bunch of Somalians that moved to town, and they get paid from their employer, plus they get paid by the govt, and get govt benefits. The tax payers are paying for them to be here, and take all of our jobs.
