If Islam is a religion of piece, than why does the Quran give specific orders on how to carry out Jihad?

2007-02-15 12:06:28 · 17 answers · asked by Anonymous in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

Jihad is NOT self defense.

"And fight in the way of Allah with those who fight against you and do not transgress bounds. God does not love the transgressors. Kill them wherever you may find them and drive them out, and remeber persecution is worse than carnage... But if you attack put them to the sword. This is how disbelievers are rewarded.
Quran 2: 190-194

If anyone of you brings up the Crusades, remeber it was the POPES idea, nowhere in the Bible does it say how to fight a war. Religion of peace= how to make war? I dont think so.

Jihad is not terrorism, but unfortunately more and more often, Islam has been associated with terrorism and violence due to the actions of a few extreme individuals who’ve taken it upon themselves to do the most heinous crimes in the name of Islam.

Tragic events such as the attack on the twin towers in New York, the bombings of Bali, Madrid and London are assumed to be justified by Islam in the minds of some people. This idea has been fueled further by many media channels which defame Islam by portraying these bombers as ‘Islamists’ or ‘Jihadists’, as though they were sanctioned by Islam, or had any legitimate spokemenship on behalf of Muslims. The actions of a few fanatical individuals who happen to have Muslim names or ascribe themselves to the Muslim faith should not be a yardstick by which Islam is judged. For the same reason, that one would not do justice to Christianity if it where perceived as sanctioning the genocide of the Native Americans, the atrocities of world war II or the bombings of the IRA.

To understand Islam’s stance on terrorism, one must refer to its original sources, the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, which are explicit in their prohibition of any form of injustice including that of wanton violence which seeks to instill fear, injury or death to civilians.

The Quran turns our attention to the high value of human life, whether it is Muslim or Non-Muslim and makes it absolutely forbidden to take an innocent life unjustly. The gravity of such a crime is equated, in the Quran, with the killing of all humanity.

“On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.” ( 5:32 )

Not only is human life sacred in Islam but the property, wealth, family and dignity of all individuals in society are to be respected and protected. Those who transgress these rights and sow fasad (corruption) as the Quran describes it, incur the wrath of Allah.

"…and seek not corruption in the earth; lo! Allah loveth not corrupters " (28:77)

Likewise in another verse

“The blame is only against those who oppress men and wrong-doing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice: for such there will be a penalty grievous” (42:42)

Islam goes further than just prohibiting oppression and safeguarding rights, it commands its faithful to deal kindly and compassionately to all those who seek to live in peace and harmony

"Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for your faith, nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: For Allah loves those who are just" (60:8)

In times of war and conflict, where enmity can obstruct an individual’s judgement to act morally, Islam commands that justice be upheld even towards one’s enemies.

"O ye who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do" (5:8)

Centuries before the Geneva Convention was drawn up, Muslims were bound by a code of conduct which the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, set. He forbade the killing of women, children and elderly in war. In an authentic narration the Prophet (pbuh) warned that he who kills anyone who has a covenant of peace with the Muslims will not smell the scent of Paradise. In fact, he taught that justice is not only to humans but must be shown to animals and all living things. In a narration the Prophet (pbuh) informed us about how a lady was sent to hell because of a cat she had locked up until it starved and died. If such is the sanctity which Islam places on the soul of an animal, how much more grave is the killing of hundreds of innocent humans?!

Abu Bakr the first Calipha of the Muslims reflected these prophetic teachings when he advised his general Yazid, who was confronting Roman armies,

"I advise you ten things, Do not kill women or children or an aged, infirm person. Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees. Do not destroy an inhabited place. Do not slaughter sheep or camels except for food. Do not burn bees and do not scatter them. Do not steal from the booty, and do not be cowardly."

The message of the Quran is clear as we have seen, that the sanctity of any human life is to be respected and any violation in that regard is paramount to the worst crime. Mercy is at the heart of the Islamic call, “We sent thee (O Muhammad) not save as a mercy for the peoples” (21:107); a totally different message to what the terrorists are sadly imparting to humanity.

First off all the verses you quote are taken out of context. I advice you to read the whole chapter and its history before you judge anyone.

As far as Jihad: The word "Jihad" means struggle, or to be specific, striving in the cause of God. Any struggle done in day-to-day life to please God can be considered Jihad. One of the highest levels of Jihad is to stand up to a tyrant and speak a word of truth. Control of the self from wrong doings is also a great Jihad. One of the forms of Jihad is to take up arms in defense of Islam or a Muslim country when Islam is attacked. This kind of Jihad has to be declared by the religious leadership or by a Muslim head of state who is following the Quran and Sunnah.

Perhaps you should read the enitre passage. Many people like to trick others by not stating the whole passage. Here is the whole passage. the greatest Jihad in the fight of you inner self,
the war jihad is when you are fighting in self-defence. In Islam, it is prohibbited be the agressor, it is only promiited to fight in slef defense and for people who are oppressed in the land.

Rules of War*

[2:190] You may fight in the cause of GOD against those who attack you, but do not aggress. GOD does not love the aggressors.

[2:191] You may kill those who wage war against you, and you may evict them whence they evicted you. Oppression is worse than murder. Do not fight them at the Sacred Masjid, unless they attack you therein. If they attack you, you may kill them. This is the just retribution for those disbelievers.

[2:192] If they refrain, then GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

[2:193] You may also fight them to eliminate oppression, and to worship GOD freely. If they refrain, you shall not aggress; aggression is permitted only against the aggressors.

[2:194] During the Sacred Months, aggression may be met by an equivalent response. If they attack you, you may retaliate by inflicting an equitable retribution. You shall observe GOD and know that GOD is with the righteous.

[2:195] You shall spend in the cause of GOD; do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction. You shall be charitable; GOD loves the charitable.

May God's peace be with you.

First of all, you should understand the concept of Jihad.
Jihad is not killin' people for no reason, like the extremists have presented it as...and most people see it as today, because of the way the media has portrayed it as...
Jihad is SELF DEFENSE...I think that has a simple meaning...easy to understand...
Jihad is also STRIVING IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH (GOD)...Now, this can have multiple meanings...STRIVING...striving to follow your religions...striving to give up bad, and do what is good...this includes preaching...but not randomly going out and burning buildings...God loves all of his creations, and never said to go out and kill all the non-believers...ok...and the radical extremists...in Islam, don't understand that...
I hope this clears the misconseptions about Jihad in Islam.

The Jihad that you see right now isn't what quran said. Quran never states that killing innocent people is good and if you do it you'll go to heaven. One big help that I can give you is to ignore the media and if you want to know more about Islam do it on your own without any outside influence. unfortunately the media has harmed Islam and portrayed a bad image from it.

There is a negative peace and a positive peace.
The negative peace is where ppl live unwillingly under opression and injustice, but they dont act out of fear.
The positive peace is what islam encourages, Jihad against opression and injustice is essential, so this peace would prevail!!!

Jihad is only carried out under specific conditions like when you or your family have been attacked or are in imminent danger of being attacked. Under no circumstances does Jihad permit women or children being slaughtered and if you are referring to the current terrorist acts they are totally wrong and baseless. It is a shame that they call themselves Muslims and use the holy Quran for their devious purposes. Islam is a totally peaceful religion and only preaches love and respect for the fellow man despite whatever religion they practice or profess and even for atheists.

it incredibly is an exceptionally long checklist, first of all we at the instant are not attempting to be superb, whether some Muslims attempting to be by using fact they experience which you seem at them as though they have been frightening creatures, Qoran did no longer instruct us to kill or to hate non-Muslims, Quoran instructed us to no longer start up attacking or scuffling with until eventually the different area does. in actuality the Quoran says that Christians are extra nicer, and that they've an inclination to be solid to you. in actuality whilst a jew guy died, whilst prophet Muhammed become alive Prophet Muhammed-pbuh- stood in grief, his buddy instructed him why are you so unhappy for the died guy, he wasn't Muslim, He instructed them: Wasn't he someone. The Prophet who you're conversing approximately made a peace contract with the Jews in Al Madina, and he even made a truce between 2 jew tribes have been in combat at that element (Al Awes & El Khazraj). AS FOR "women human beings opression" Stone women human beings????, the place did you get that from??????????? If Islam stated that the only (guy or woman) dedicate adultry, then they the two could be punished. Opression got here from the girls human beings themselves, they did no longer comprehend their rights, so as that they've been extremely pushed. the errors got here from human beings yet no longer from the rule or the device or the religion. i'm A Muslim woman, and that i incredibly comprehend what i'm conversing approximately. As for Prophet Muhammed-PBUH- he did no longer have slaves, while you're conversing approximately "Anas Ibn Malek", his mom gave him as a cutting-edge to P. Muhammed-PBUH- specific, as a cutting-edge, by using fact she enjoyed him lots that she gave him the main efficient element in her existence, by using fact she knew that right here son would be raised with the help of an exceptionally marvelous guy of an exceptionally extreme morals. "Anas Ibn Malek" stated that P. Muhammad-PBUH- under no circumstances shouted at him, he & the Prophet used to eat from the comparable plate. end SNIFFING CRACK. thank you.
