i live in orange county, and one of the local politicians here, Loretta Sanchez, has a christmas card with her and her cat and a surf board, and it says "pet the cat." well, i don't get it.

"Pet the cat" is a surfing term. When someone is surfing the line of a wave and reaches out to drag their hand along the face of it, they are petting the cat. I hope this helps.
