I walk for miles along a certain street to relax, but every time, I notice this old man who also walks the street. Only, the poor man is walking literally bent over, I mean, REALLY bent over, it looks like he's picking up a penny, only that's how he walks. I can't imagine the pain he must be in. He has no wheelchair, no walker, not even a cane. I pass by him a few times a day sometimes, and I really want to help make things more bearable for this man. I suspect he's homeless, but I see him with a portable radio and sometimes, grocery bags. I hate to sound judgemental, but he looks like he could be mentally unstable, so I've been too nervous to do anything but give him a kind smile or say a shakey "hello". I volunteer for a nursing home. Do you think I should buy a cane and just hand it to him (how much do they cost?)? Do you think the hospital can make arrangements to get this man a wheelchair? I just can't ignore this problem. What can I do to help him?

Are you sure we don't live in the same town?! There is a guy like that where I live too.
Anyway, he may not be in pain. It may look painful, but it doen't mean it is. I think it's very sweet that you want to help him, but unless you stop and talk to him, you really can't. You don't know his story, you can only assume. He could be an excentric millionaire for all you know.
Take a friend along on your walks and stop to talk to him if you are afraid to do it alone. Once you know his story, you'll know what to do.

Ask some one at a hospital or the local police or at the nursing home that you volunteer. Always be careful around people you don't know, you don't know there past or there issues. Have some one with you if you ask him if he need help or a cane or a wheelchair. There are organizations around your area that will give him a wheel chair if that’s what he needs. He may be a proud man that will refuse help and if he does use that opportunity to talk to him and get to know him maybe you can help him in another way. Not enough of us help people that are in need of help, you should be proud that you feel the need to help and proud that you volunteer at the nursing home, I am proud of you. You have a great soul. Good Luck and best wishes...

Talk to him about it. Some people just DON'T want help, though. If he's got mental problems, then talk to someone at mental health.
