I know a little about some religions but I know more about Islam.
According to Islam God asks Muslims to worship his majesty, but at
the same time he tells them that he is needless and their prayers don't
make him more powerful. Also, God tells Muslims that their rituals
are for their benefits in this life. Example:
-In Ramadan, Muslims abstain completely from eating, drinking,
intimate sexual contacts and smoking from the break of dawn till
sunset. If you think a little you'll realize that abstaining from eating
doesn't give anything to god, but it teaches people many things,
such as:
1) During fasting, Muslims feel hungry so they will have the same
feeling that poor people who can't afford to buy food have.
2) It also teaches them to control their instincts when they want to, so they won't be
preoccupied by sex and food only all the time.

To maintain control over a group of people and manipulate them. Essentially is was created to maintain peace, but when two different religions clash there is anything but peace.

Many people desire to believe in a higher power. Religion provides that belief.
