I say ditch the "car" and go for the jeep...but so will most of the other people who regularly peruse the jeep section.
If you're looking for something to get around on slick roads with, then the all wheel drive and other traction control features of the murano will be hard to beat, and, although I'm not sure of the '04 specs, the murano probably has a little better gas mileage. The short wheelbase of the 2 door and the part time 4wd can make the wrangler a little squirrely onroad in slick situations, but these are only part of what make it an offroad beast. That, along with a solid front axle, awesome approach departure and breakover angles, and the ability to customize make it one of the most unstoppable vehicles out there.
As for it being problematic, I'd at least wait till next year's model. Being that this is the first year it's been in production, there'll be more long term reviews done, and it'll give chrysler time to work some bugs out of it.

The Jeep has something the Murano can only dream of - namely the ability to go off-road. Wranglers are number one, for off-roading and have excellent ability in all kinds of situations, including snow. Watch out on ice, though, unless you go for the longer-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited. Also, you can remove the roof, doors, and windshield for the ultimate convertible. Also, the Jeep Wrangler holds its value better than any other vehicle in the United States. Ten year old models in my neck of the woods are still going for $8,000 - $12,000.
As for reliablity, the Wranglers of the past (The 1987-1993 models and the 1997 model) weren't all that good, but it has improved greatly since then. The most recent Wranglers have rated (according to Consumer Reports) more reliable than recent Nissan models, including the Murano. Unfortunately, since this is the newest model, reliability is unknown for now, so you'll still be taking some of a risk.
I'd still say ditch the Nissan and go for the Jeep.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

2007 models are excellent in the snow now that they have esp, it would kick *** over the murano, I have a 07 2 door rubicon, you talk about wanting to know if its problematic. when they first started making them the freedom top leaked, i got that fixed free of charge from the dealer. only other problem is my seat squeaks but im geeting that fixed on tuesday. Personally i love it but you have a murano and that car rides so smooth so you have to really think do you want a wrangler or do you just want to tell evreyone you have one. you will have to be a true jeep owner to own a wrangler of any year.

problematic is not the word. will it handle like your truck? no, but it will go threw snow pretty good. in a crew of like 5-6 trucks going up four peaks mnt. one time, mum brought her 02 mountaineer with chains. uncle an older f150 99', my dad a brand new f150 4 door. all stock except the f150. friends custom f350. anyways, a jeep was there, but they took off half way up, freezing their asses off. they dont know how to drive, and didnt know when to go home, but the jeep it self had a 2 inch lift, and did fine.
Newer jeeps are lifter about 2 inches now.
Can't use it for alot of road travel, carefull not to flip it.
