You treat a dog from the inside out. Depending on the size of your dog, give him 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of veg. oil on his food daily, or better yet, a salmon oil capsule every day. Also, make sure you don't bath your dog too much - that causes the skin to dry pretty badly, especially in the winter months.

I would not use a moisturizer. I would start internally. I use a raw egg on my dogs dry food to develope a show coat. You can also put a couple of tablespoons of pure corn oil on the food. Give the dog a high quality vitamin (not the junk in the grocery store, get one from the vet or a dog supply store). You will see a dramatic change within two months. I use this formula for my show dog with wonderful results.

They make ones specifically for dogs. You should also take a good look at your dog's diet. Dry skin can be a sign of feeding your dog an inadequate or low-quality food. Here is an easy test, most quality foods for dogs retail for at least $1 per pound. If your current dog food costs less then $1/lb it is probably made mainly from things like corn, other grains, and meat by-products. IMHO corn does not belong in dog food. I would recommend Canidae brand dog food. Its improved my dog's skin and coat as well as increased her energy level.

For a small dog, 1 - 2 teaspoons of Cod Liver Oil in their food one to two times per week.
For larger dogs, 1-2 tablespoons 1-2 times per week in their food.
It's not a good idea to use lotions that are made for humans. They have chemicals in them and dogs tend to lick it off anyway.

You can try Oatmeal Shampoo, which you can buy in any pet store. It' s used for dry skin, and skin allergy's in dogs. It's supposed to work really well, in soothing the irritated skin. I think they also have Conditioner.

If you want a solution, then you need to go from the inside. If you want to mask the symptoms, then moisturize.
My dogs eat raw food. They eat a carnivorous diet. They eat raw meaty bones and organs.
My dogs don't itch. They have clean teeth. They have sweet breath.
I don't "do" anything to them. They are eating the correct and proper diet for their species.
