I love animals and dogs of all kinds. I want to adopt from a shelter, but right now that won't work because there's no small puppies (I need a puppy to get used to my cats.) I also live in a small apartment so I cannot have a large dog. I've decided I want a Chihuahua. I've heard they're great dogs for apartments (I actually live in a large townhouse with a small private yard). Is there anything specific I should know about Chihuahuas or watch out for?

Chihuahua's are a great breed!!! It's great that your thinking of the shelter but if one doesn't work out there and you get one from a breeder, make sure you don't get one called 'tea cup' because there is no such thing as a tea cup chihuahua. The owner is just trying to get you to pay more money.

Chihuahua's tend to only bond with one person and so needs heaps of socialization when it's still a puppy.

Chihuahua's come in ANY colour do don't buy from someone saying that have a 'rare' coloured chi

They should get along great with other pets if they are brought up with them.

Here are some chihuahua links in the source's section. Hope i helped

1. Make sure no small children are around the Chihuahua, one drop from three feet up could kill it possible or break a leg.

2. If you get a puppy make sure to have something sugary on hand. Chihuahuas particularly can suffer from low blood sugar when under stress and go into shock or cardiac arrest. But just a simple lick of Molasses or something else could keep that under control.

3. When Chihuahuas are puppies they have a soft part in their skull that is called Molera. This could take a year or longer to close, but that spot is very sensitive and should never be hit there.

4. Their is no such thing as a Tea cup or toy chihuahua. The Chihuahua is naturally a toy breed and any breeder who is raising the prices of a so called "Tea Cup chihuhua" is inexperienced and lying. Don't buy into it.

5. Do not let your puppy on the floor of any public place before he/she has had all of it's shots. Chihuahuas have very small nervous systems and can catch something very easily.

Visit a fact website about Chihuahuas. Just to let you know too. They are very very hard to potty train. Friends of ares had 1 and they brought it over, it peed and poopood all over our basement. Sorry to tell you but pomerainians are quite nice for a small dog too. BY the way the dog was 6 it wasn't a baby that made these messes. :(

They are adorable..however if you want a small one you should consider the size of your cat, they are very fragile and they are a people dog, meaning they are lap dogs. they don't like being alone..if your gone alot. I did breed long hair Chihuahua's and short hair, the long hair do not shake and shiver as much as the short. The short hair is very nervous.

Sounds like a Chihuahua would be a good option for you. Make sure you properly socialize your Chi - to all types of people and other animals.

WEll they are REALLY hyper dogs. I know from experience, they love to bark and chew. I recommend a jack russle terrier, toy poodle, beagle, or maybe a weenie dog.

these little guys need clothes to keep warm in cool climates. also, they are so anxious! it's cute, but irritating sometimes. some of them don't bark, others bark all the time! just keep 'em warm and happy!
