I just saw an infomercial for these hooks that go through the wallboard and put the weight on the back of the wall board. They were hanging all kinds of heavy stuff with them and didn't have to look for the studs. It's called the Hurcules Hook. Go to www.asseenontv.com and they have them there.
From the site:
The Hercules Hook is the easiest way to hang pictures, mirrors, shelves just about anything. Easy to install just twist, push and turn! No more drilling or pounding to try to find a stud - No more damaged walls! The reinforced steel design provides the muscle to hang and hold up to 150 lbs. Great for plaster, drywall or paneling.

There are several types of hangers made for this in the hardware stores. Some of them open up inside the hole; I think they are called anchors.
You can also put 2 hooks on the wall, attach wire to them both and the middle point of the wire is what you hang the picture onto.
You could also check at an Aaron Brothers Art Mart, where they specialize in such things.

Put a nail or screw in each of the studs on either side of your center point and then have a wire on the back of the picture you hook on to the wire. This will also make the picture less likely to fall because the weight will be distributed between two points rather than just one.

Go to the harware store & ask for molly bolts or If the picture is not to heavy you can put a nail in the wall on a down word angle. Aprox 45 deg angle.

If your picture is wide enough you can find the next two studs (one on either side of center of picture) and hang it on those. If not, I've seen these things on TV that look like big fish hooks that hold a ton of weight.

There is new product on the market that claims to be able to hold up to 150 lbs. and it produces a very small hole and doesn't need a stud. Go to the websites of the tv remodeling shows. You might find it there, or maybe Lowes has it.
It is a long sort of s shaped metal hook. Sorry, don't know the name.

Use a dry wall hanger. It's a plastic thingy you put in the wall and the nail goes into that. Just go to Lowe's and ask for help they will get you what you. And it is not expensive.

Use two hooks, one off the stud the other in equal distance according to where you want it to hang.

Use a plastic anchor with a screw. Any hardware store employee can direct you to the right one. And, you may need two of them if your picture is really heavy?
