This is the Kool Aid recipe I use- it's nonedible though/ I have several other recipes for edible doughs-- one with peanut butter and one with canned frosting.
KOOL - AID PLAY DOUGH
1 c. flour, sifted
3 tbsp. oil
1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. salt
1 sm. pkg. Kool-Aid or other unsweetened drink mix

Well, I'm not sure about play dough, but I know that my 11 year old brother compares the fondant that I use to play dough. I would not recommend buying it as the taste leaves a lot to be desired, but I do happen to have a very popular recipe to give you!
INGREDIENTS
1 (.25 ounce) package unflavored gelatin
1/4 cup cold water
1/2 cup glucose syrup (can substitute for kayro syrup)
1 tablespoon glycerin
2 tablespoons shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
8 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
DIRECTIONS
Combine gelatin and cold water; let stand until thick. Place gelatin mixture in top of double boiler and heat until dissolved.
Add glucose and glycerin, mix well. Stir in shortening and just before completely melted, remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Mixture should cool until lukewarm.
Place 4 cups confectioners' sugar in a large bowl. Make a well in the center and using a wooden spoon, stir in the lukewarm gelatin mixture. Mix in sugar and add more a little at a time, until stickiness disappears. Knead in remaining sugar. Knead until the fondant is smooth, pliable and does not stick to your hands. If fondant is too soft, add more sugar; if too stiff, add water (a drop at a time). Use fondant immediately or store in airtight container in fridge. When ready to use, bring to room temperature and knead again until soft.
You can add food coloring to change the color.
Allrecipes.com has some good things to say about this recipe and you could probably even find more.

Ya it will. Just to warn you though, its not as good as normal play doh. The home made stuff tends to fall apart easier and dry out faster. This will work though

YES... it is called "sugar cookie dough". Add food coloring for the colors and omit the eggs if you are paranoid of raw eggs.
After playing with it it can be baked and the kids can then decorate that as well.
