You don't award a job based on what a salesman gets paid or doesn't get paid. Contact your local BBB, ask for references and call them, and check with your local building department for complaints and compliance. The money that you lay out will make little difference with a bad job.

the guy doing it himself obviously offers a lesser price on materials. BUT are they something he had in the garage? or are you choosing it? my advise (from sales exp) buy the product you want yourself. that way you can return it for you $ back if something goes wrong. if they buy it, only they can return it. he can always discuss labor issues on site.
