And when the brain dies, how does this 'thinking' soul float away without a brain? Can a soul think?--assuming you believe that the soul will be fully aware as the person you are, just like people profess with their near death experiences...
How is a soul able to think and feel without a brain?

and does that mean animals can't think and feel, because they don't possess a soul, since you must think it is your soul which is responsible for thoughts and feelings, not your brain?

It is in your heart because Jesus said so. Next time read The Bible before asking such ignorant questions.

Great question!
Genesis 2:7 explains what your soul is. When God created Adam, he formed his body out of dust, and then breathed life into it and Adam became a living soul. Your soul is you, your self, your person, your life. You don't HAVE a soul, you ARE a soul. Your soul is sustained by breathing.

Sometimes in the news, they will mention that in some disaster '23 souls were lost'. That means the same as saying '23 lives were lost'. In 1 Peter 3:20, the Bible describes those who survived the flood as 8 souls.

Leviticus 17:11 mentions that our soul is in our blood. That is the case because our life is in our blood, it is sustained by our blood.

When we die, our soul therefore dies. Ezekiel 18:4 states that the soul dies. Several other verses mention deceased souls. (Like Lev 19:28 and Lev 21:1) In contrast, it often mentions living souls (Genesis 1:20, 21)

Since our soul dies when we die, Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 describes the dead as having no consciousness or knowledge.

Interestingly, animals also have souls. For example, in Genesis 1:21, 30 and Genesis 2:19 animals are described as souls.

When we die, our soul doesn't 'go' anywhere. It just dies. It's like turning off a light. The light doesn't 'go' somewhere else, it just ceases.

Since our soul dies when we do, the only way we become a soul again is when God resurrects us. At that time, he will create a new body for us, breathe life into us, and we will be a soul once again.

The word soul is found in the Bible hundreds of times. If you have a computer program that allows you to search for specific words in the Bible, you might find it very interesting to see how the Bible uses that word. (Or look up 'soul' in the index in the back of your Bible.) I just did that in my Bible while looking for your answer and found it fascinating.

Enjoy!

The 1st thing you need to understand is that a brain is a physical thing. A soul is not physical. I think a soul can affect your thinking, but I don't think it depends on your brain at all.

Another thing, I think a soul takes up space in your entire being. But I'm not sure, thats just how I see it. I could be wrong.

God bless.

I look at the soul as being spiritual not physical, and I believe animals have a soul too.

First of all, you do not have and immortal soul, if you did, then why had no one gone to Heaven before Jesus came to the Earth, 4000 years had came & gone since Adam & Eve, millions of people had died, what did Jesus say to a man of the Pharisees, Nic·o·de'mus was his name, a ruler of the Jews.

John 3:13
“Moreover, no man has ascended into heaven but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man.”

What is a Soul?
Right in the very first book of the Bible, Genesis, we are told that the soul is not something you have, it is something you are. We read of the creation of Adam, the first human being: “The man came to be a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) The Hebrew word used here for soul, ne'phesh, occurs well over 700 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, never once conveying the idea of a separate, ethereal, spiritual part of man. On the contrary, the soul is tangible, concrete, physical.

Look up the following cited texts in your own copy of the Bible, for the Hebrew word ne'phesh is found in each of them. They clearly show that the soul can face risk, danger, and even be kidnapped (Deuteronomy 24:7; Judges 9:17; 1 Samuel 19:11); touch things (Job 6:7); be locked up in irons (Psalm 105:18); crave to eat, be afflicted by fasting, and faint from hunger and thirst; and suffer from a wasting disease or even insomnia as a result of grief. (Deuteronomy 12:20; Psalm 35:13; 69:10;) In other words, because your soul is you, your very self, your soul can experience anything you can experience.

Does that mean, then, that the soul can actually die? Yes. Far from being immortal, human souls are spoken of in the Hebrew Scriptures as being “cut off,” or executed, for wrongdoing, being struck fatally, murdered, destroyed, and torn to pieces. (Exodus 31:14; Deuteronomy 19:6; 22:26; Psalm 7:2) “The soul that is sinning, it itself will die,” says Ezekiel 18:4. Clearly, death is the common end of human souls, since all of us sin. (Psalm 51:5) The first man, Adam, was told that the penalty for sin was death, not transfer to the spirit realm and immortality. (Genesis 2:17) And when he sinned, the sentence was pronounced: “For dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) When Adam and Eve died, they simply became what the Bible often refers to as ‘dead souls’ or ‘deceased souls.’

Animals were created with a limited life span, humans had the prospect of living on earth forever. ( Psalm 37:29) Jesus Christ said that to enjoy “everlasting life,” we must exercise faith and take in knowledge of God, things that animals are incapable of doing. (John 17:3)

God created animals for the sake of humans. Animals can help them do their work and can serve as their companions or pets. They also serve to magnify God’s love and wisdom.

The Creator gave life to both humans and animals. But for how long were they to continue to live? Scientists report that humans seem to have the potential of endless life, so that investigators are perplexed as to why man dies. The Bible gives the reason. It says that the Creator gave the first humans the opportunity of living forever. Death came only because they rebelled. (Gen. 2:17; 3:17-19) What, though, of animals? They are not capable of conscious rebellion against God; yet they live only for a length of time and then die. Hence, it is clear that the Creator never purposed that individual animals live forever. For them death was natural..

Here are some scriptures that strongly suggest man's continued self-awareness and continued existence after death (Luke 16:19-31; 2 Cor. 5:1-10; Phil. 1:21-23).

The soul is the part that makes 'you' you.The part that gives you personality. When you die,it leaves and moves on.Your body dies because it's flesh.Your soul/spirit leaves because it's spirit. You can think, see, and feel emotion. It doesn't need a brain because it is no longer physical.

we're not a 'we'. it is an in intensity to reality. each and each and every people is an I, or a me, and that i or me is diverse from the different Is or mes wandering round attempting to outline themselves. regrettably for them, they could't be me no count number how troublesome they might attempt. they are going to continually be second-cost, a cheap knock-off.

You are--a living soul, that is. You don't have a soul, you Are one and the soul is in the blood and the blood, the soul, is precious to God who gave us life. HE IS LOVE and He loved the world so much that He gave His only-begotten son that we would gain EVERLASTING life.
AND, animals are souls also.

well i've heard that the soul is located in lower spine very close to our little "tail" and that when the body dies (clinical death) the aura (light refelcting your emotional state) leaves and so with it your soul.
