More than likely it will go directly to the school. You will only get a check if they send more to the school than is needed to cover tuition costs and that check will be a refund check from the school.

At least, this is the case for me. I have never been sent a check from the guarantor for the amount of the loan.

Once the lender has received the promissory note, funds will be made available to the school for disbursements. Schools set disbursement dates and apply your Stafford Loan proceeds directly to cost of tuition. Any money left over will be sent to you as a refund check or applied back towards the loan at your discretion.

It completely depends on your school, they are in charge of disbursing your money. My check took over a month...and I only got it that fast because I constantly called to make sure they were doing their job because it should NOT have taken that long.

If you want to find out when it will be disbursed, call your school's financial aid office.
