My daughter has extra thick hair and I think this may be a partial cause of severe dandruff problem. We have tried just about everything and it is just getting worse. It is affecting her self esteem. Only answer this question if you have a tried and true solution since there is a child involved and I don't want to do anything that will only make the problem worse. Thank you so much for your help!!!

I can understand why your daughter is suffering self esteem problems from this, it can be a very embarrassing condition especially if you have tried everything. You may need to see your GP and then a dermatologist but i have one last suggestion for you before you do. Also keep in mind that some of the chemicals in medicated shampoos are very harsh, especially on children and i believe they should only be used as a last resort. Personally I also have very thick hair and have at times suffered from dandruff, more so when i was younger. Firstly find a new hair style for her and take away the bulk and weight in her hair, you can still keep it long if thats how it is but have the hairdresser chip into it and razor it, you will feel the difference and there will be less stress on her scalp and skin when you remove all that weight. Next does she suffer from dry skin anywhere else or just on her scalp? If its elsewhere i suggest looking into her diet, she is most likely eating something she is slightly intollerant to, and that in mind intollerence is vastly different to allergy and can be quite hard to identify. If the dryness is localised to her scalp than this should be a bit easier to fix up. Firstly lets get some moisture in there. Avoid chemicals for a while, avoid any shampoos with sodium laureth sulphates, these are used as a chemical foaming agent and completeky strip your natural oils, its a trap because you want the dandruff gone you wash and wash again and again but it only strips more and more oil out and makes it all dryer. Find a really gentle organic shampoo or shampoo soap (handmade shampoo soap isnt like commercial body soap and wont dry your hair like you think) I use them through the summer when i swim at the beach a lot. Sit her down in a quiet and comfy space and rub warm pure cold pressed olive oil gently into her scalp. Try not to work it through her hair but just focus on the scalp and focus on itchy and scaly areas. Leave it on for a little while maybe 7 - 10 min and wash it out with warm water and your organic shampoo (It doesnt need to be organic im just used to saying that but it needs to be natural and chemical free). I think do this for a while, and everday if need be to get that oil in, to amp up the effect put a towel in really hot water and then put it through spin in your washing machine and wrap her head up in the warm towel while the oil is on. Just a note, you have to know your stuff with the shampoo's its not enought to get one just labelled natural or that comes in a green bottle, lol, my friends have done this, its just marketing!!!! Check the label, read the ingredients, dont put anything near her skin that is a strippiing agent or harsh chemical. Once you get the pH of her scalp back to normal you should be fine to go back to a gentle commercial shampoo. G'luck and I hope you get her self esteem booming again!!!!!

Stop trying all these remedies and seek the advice of a Dr. It may be a medical condition and need medicated shampoo that is prescribed. All these other things may be making it worse. There is a medicated shampoo which has tar in it and it may be the last thing I would try and I would also not use anything drying on her...like sea breeze? that is drying and will cause drying of the scalp and more dandruff. Use a soothing scalp conditioner. Maybe some hot oil treatment over the weekend and leave it in for a long time but concentrate on the scalp. Then the Dr. if it's noot better. Good luck.

Are you sure that it is only dandruff? Your daughter could possibly have psoriasis of the scalp, which can be mistaken as dandruff. Is the dandruff worse in certain spots than others?Take a look at her scalp for scaly, pink/red patches, it's not always itchy. There is a special, medicated shampoo that the doctor can give you for this condition. It wouldn't hurt to see what the doctor says.

Not to argue with Kiah but , dandruff is caused by a fungus(malassezia capitis). Dry scalp is another story. All of the before mentioned causes can lead to dry scalp. Your daughter may have eczema or Seborrhoeic dermatitis. She should see a doctor before you try anything. You can try Hask. You can find it at a beauty supply such as Sally. It's easy to use and I have found it to work in most cases. Sulfur shampoos also work well. Keep her hair as sweat free as possible because, this can cause her condition to worsen.

Dandruff Treatment
What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is simply dead skin shedding from your head at a fast rate. Almost everyone has had dandruff at some point to one degree or another. People with a strong degree of dandruff will experience an itchy scalp.
Causes of Dandruff:
The following are items that may cause dandruff:
Hormone imbalance.
Excessive perspiration
Allergic reactions
Excessive stress
Poor hygene
Poor nutritioin/health
Lack of sleep
Inherited genetic trait
Inadequete shampooing and rinsing of the hair.
Tight fitting hats.
Excessive use of hair styling products (gel, mouse, hair dye, hair curler...)
Cold weather
Dry enviroment.
Excessive Heat

Nizoral
Nizoral is the only shampoo containing a patented active ingredient known as ketoconazole (discovered by Dr. Paul Janssen in Belgium). This ingredient is medically proven to be effective against P. ovale and acts directly to inhibit growth of the fungus. Most other anti-dandruff shampoos work by normalizing the pH of the scalp. Nizoral is the most well-studied anti-dandruff shampoo available today. There is over a decade of clinical experience with Nizoral.

This product is the number one choice of doctors and pharmacists, who have recommended an anti-dandruff shampoo to millions of dandruff sufferers all over the world. Nizoral shampoo is also unique in that it's effect is long-lasting. Even after rinsing, Nizoral carries on working for several days. This means that you don't need to use Nizoral every day making it extremely cost-effective.

Treatment In Severe Cases
In severe cases dermatologists will prescribe a special ointment or lotion to treat the problem. It is generally agreed that drugstore products which contain zinc pyritheone or selenium sulfide are the most effective in ridding the scalp of dandruff flakes. If a scalp shows signs of redness, swelling, scabbing, or gooeyness - accompanied by flakes, in all likelihood there could be another scalp disease involved like psoriasis or ringworm (yucky, but can be treated). With any of these symptoms it is important to see your health care provider immediately!

Diet
According to the Encyclopedia of Natural Healing by Siegfried Gursche, nutrition can play a big part in controlling dandruff. To counteract the inefficient carbohydrates and fatty-acid metabolization, which can cause dandruff, include plenty of B vitamins in your diet. Nutritional yeast and raw wheat germ are two excellent sources of B vitamins, particularly vitamin B6 which plays an important role in controlling dandruff.

Eggs and cabbage also provide vitamin B6 in addition to supplying sulfur which is nature's beauty mineral for the scalp. Sometimes an allergy to dairy products may cause dandruff in which case alternative food sources of vitamin B6 are preferred. Other common allergens which provoke dandruff are chocolate, nuts and shellfish. The good fats, found in nuts and flax seed benefit the body and promote healthy scalps.

Alternative Treatments
Garlic and oil of oregano are also excellent for fighting dandruff. You can take it internally or externally depending on what seems to work best for your situation. Both are sold in health food stores as capsules or tablets.

Improving Circulation
Alternating hot and cold water on the head increases circulation to the scalp. Yoga headstands will also help with circulation. Exercising out in the fresh air will also help with circulation to the scalp. Brush your scalp carefully to loosen scales before shampooing. If you wash your hair daily use small amounts of baby shampoo. Harsh shampoos will just cause the sebaceous gland to overcompensate by producing more oil than necessary.

Sulfur Products Are Beneficial
Onions are high in sulfur. Cut a fresh onion in half and rub it on the scalp, I know it looks strange. Wash your hair once a week with a sulfur based soap. Avoid hair products that contain alcohol which dries out the scalp. Also avoid hair dryers which will also dry the scalp and add to the problem.

Consult a dermitologist. They can prescribe medications that will clear up severe dandruff in a flash. Or maybe you could try buying some really good lotion, pouring it into a bucket, and have her dip her head into it and leave it for a while...IDK it might work =). Or see what temperature she's taking showers at. If the temp. is too high, that could be causing it too.

Dry scalp is an indicator of an imbalance in body chemistry most likely due to the demands of your pregnancy it appears. Try to eat well to support the body's needs and wait until after you deliver to see if it continues. External treatments only treat the symptoms and not the causes.
