I agree with Andrew C. If it doesn't "jive" with his holy word, then its not from him.
My suggestion is you pray every morning when you get up. Lord let your will be done in my life. Open my ears so that I may hear and my eyes that I may see. Please show me how to be Christ like in all that I do. Then thank him, always thank him for acknowledging your relationship and guiding your path.
Forgive yourself sweetie, forgiveness is the first step in walking forward with him. If you have repented for your sins (mistakes) throw them away as he did for he will not remember them and neither should you.
You aren't going to be perfect. Its not perfection you are after but progression.
God is guiding you to ask this question to get the encouragement you need.
Just pray and read, pray and read, pray and read.
God Bless and I will pray for you.

Man is created in His image and likeness. That image and likeness are His graciousness and righteousness; not the physical shape or form we have before and now.
If you believe that you are being guided by God, then you should always be conscious of your decisions all the time. You may experience some results from your decisions that you may not agree with. Not all good results are necessarily the right ones. In the same manner that not all things that you think are good deeds are the right deeds and there are mistakes that sometimes are needed for you to learn from life. To trust yourself is to use your mind to know the consequences of what you will do and from knowing that, then you can choose through your heart so you can be ready to accept whatever results your decision will make for you. If you fail, learn from it. If you succeed go fly high but keep remembering that your feet shall always touch the ground to humble and give thanks to your guide.

I know how you feel. Remember that always start off with the idea that serving God is about DOING and not thinking too much. Ive seen people at Bible college overanalyze things and look for little signs of what God wants them to do. I have come to the conclusion that Gods will is something you go DO and not sit and wait for. When God has specific things he wants you to do he will reveal those in his own way but always keep in mind this verse because it separates a believer from an unbeliever.
So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. -Galatians 5:16

Our decisions should be made after considering 3 different things:
1. The bible. Does the bible support my thoughts, my decisions? does it give me principles to follow, examples to stay clear of, etc?
2. Godly counsel. Trusted friends, a pastor, a minister, a home bible study group. what do they think? Am I just going my own way or do my friends support me?
3. Prayer. Have I really prayed about it? do I really want god's will above my will?
Even after these considering these three things, sometimes we are not sure what to do. We have to exercise faith that god is leading and guiding, that He promised not to leave us or forsake us, etc. and, if we make a mistake, we acknowledge it and ask Him for forgiveness, etc.
god bless

Back it up with the Bible. Many things can speak to you. The Bible says that Satan presents himself "as an angel of light". Just because it's beautiful or moving, or if it makes you feel good, doesn't mean it should be trusted or mistrusted. The Bible is the what you check it against, as well as your own knowledge of right vs. wrong, and smart vs. stupid.
Proverbs advises that a person get council on important issues. Talk to people you respect, pastors, parents and friends. Pray that God gives you and them the wisdom to discern between the messages.

As long as you are reading His Word, and following what He has taught you. You will be on the right track. He never asks us to do anything wrong, or that would go against what He has taught. We all make mistakes, but He gives us grace. Trust in the Holy Spirit which is your like your conscience. He lets you know when you are about to do something wrong.

*If there is just one God and if that god is the one in the bible, then the only way is to read the bible and do what it says. If you add to or take away or deny some things, then you are not listening to God. If he is not the God of the bible then it just do that which is right and you will be okay. Just don't harm anyone or break any laws.*

This is a very common question that we all ask ourselves...
Does the Word back up what you think God is telling you. He always uses his Word to back him up.
Is the voice still and quiet? does it encourage you?
you can usually tell when God is leading and guiding you by the fruit you are producing. If fruit is produced then it is God, but no fruit, probably not God...

Everyone who serves the Lord and is guided by Him struggles between the temptations of sin and the calling of the Spirit. He who does not serve the Lord serves only himself.
Romans 7
21I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Romans 8
28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

You can never be sure. The closest you can probably come to "listening" to God is by listening to your conscience. Mistakes will still happen, but as long as they are not intentional you'll be fine.
