IN DEFERED ADJUDICATION HE MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE TO PERFORM SOME COMMUNITY SERVICE, BUT IN THIS INSTANCE HE WILL MOST LIKELY BE ON HIS OWN MERIT STAYING OUT OF TROUBLE FOR THE 9 MONTHS. IF HE STAYS OUT OF THE COURT SYSTEM FOR THOSE 9 MONTHS HE WILL NOT HAVE A CONVICTION FOR THE HANDGUN VIOLATION.

If he has to go to a probation officer that means that there is a possibility of jail time. So, instead of probation with a lengthy record somebody could get incarcerated. It's kind of tough to get locked up for very long nowadays because of overcrowding though.
