Since your question appears in the british forem, then i persume your british. To put it bluntly No.
You may own one but your ristricted to what you can do with it,
The onley thing that you may use it for by law is to shoot targets ie an archary club etc,, However it is illegal to use it in a public place and if carried in a public place it shuld be carried and concealed in ameans that it can not be fired. The same laws that reply to air weapons etc.
When i mentioned targets i must enthasise to you that it is illegal to hunt , maim or kill any animal by such means in the british isls

As far as I know, it's legal to own a crossbow. You can even get a permit to hunt with a crossbow, if you are handicapped, in the state where I live.

here in the US crossbows are legal everywhere. There are restrictions on hunting with crossbows in most states. I know here in Ohio you are allowed to use them at any time during the archery season, but i know we are also one of the only states where this is legal. Most states allow hunters to use them during the archery season only if they are handicapped, but most states will allow you to use them during gun seasons, but i don't really know why you would want to, if you could use a rifle or shotgun, if you are not from US, i have no idea.

Depends on what you plan on shooting. If you are going to hunt humans, then it would be against the law.
But, if you are going to hunt game animals it is perfectly legally if that state allows you to hunt with a crossbow.

To own a crossbow is not a criminal offence ! ( UK )
You do not need a licence to own one !
However it is considered to be a fire arm and must not be brought into the public domain .
When i say firearm i mean in the same capacity as an air rifle / air pistol not a shot gun etc .

You can own one and target shoot with them all you want in the states. But if you want to hunt with them its different for each state. In most states I believe you can use them during modern rifle season.

In Australia they are illegal in most states now with strict conditions impossed on club ownership only. You now need a full prohibited weapons permit (reviewed annually).
