how long does it take for a unit of alcohol to "wear off"?

On average, 1 hour per unit from the moment you stop drinking. So if you start at 8pm, drink 3 pints until 10pm (2 units each) it will be approximately 4am until the alcohol has been neutralised by your system.

If you drink 8 pints (16 units) and were due to work the next morning, you would not be legal to drive...

I agree with Finbarr but remember that other things will play into it unless you are only going to have 1 unit.
So keep in mind that an empty or full stomach and how big or small you are will make a difference.
