Women are a bigger target than men, and 'women of a certain age' who are alone, past the child bearing and raising, and more likely to be financially secure being the ones most targetted. The amateur scammers advertise for women in a large age group, fall in love very quickly and ask for money too quickly. They stand out like a sore thumb. However the professionals will run relationships for a long time, even as long as a year, before asking for money, sometimes large sums in the tens of thousands of dollars (their victims are usually Americans).

The scammers tend to use photos of models, and use a template for their history. Usually it involes a dead wife and parents. No siblings and a pre teen child. The lack of relatives is used to explain why they cannot borrow money from them, and the child shows their loving side and can also be used to fall ill or have an accident when they ask for money.

If they cannot borrow money, they will ask for cheques or money/postal orders to be deposited into the victims account and the money to be send by money transfer. The cheques or money orders are fake and the victim may not find this out for weeks, and is now responsible for loss and may be charged with fraud. Another scam is to have goods bought with stolen creditcards sent to a victims address and the victim being asked to forward these on to another address, sometimes in third world countries. Again, when the fruad is discovered the victim is responsible, and the scammer cannot be identified.

The scammers are so arrogant that even when confronted they show no fear nor remorse, knowing that they cannot and will be caught.
