Avian Flu - there's been a very promising study out for over a year, a simple natural solution. The problem is, in disease, governments are swayed by profit, and are linked closely to the pharmaceutical industry. Most funding for research comes from the pharmaceutical industry as they are the ones who can afford it, as collectively they're not far from the top earners of global wealth. The scientists who are funded by the pharma industry are at risk of losing funding unless they 'pass' the final data as effective and safe, whether it is or not. Science is compromised in this way,and the pharmaceutical industry are the ones in control. Those few scientists who stand up to the industry and expose whats going on (known generally as "whistleblowers") risk their good name and usually their career, and not many have the courage to do so.
The pharmaceutical industry are not willing to fund research that is likely to come up with a natural way of treating a disease, if a 'drug' isnt the end result then there's no millions of £££ profits to be made. Not only are they unwilling, they also ignore those studies where funding can be found elsewhere, and also tend to arrange orchestrated attempts to silence the results, as in spreading word that anything natural is "quackery".
The avian flu jab is NOT particularly effective against avian flu, and also has some serious side effects.
WHEREAS, independently researched studies,(and clearly NOT quackery as it was led by a well known flu specialist in a respected institute of a university where the funding was not provided by the pharmaceutical company) showed the following a year ago:
"26/01/2006 - Sambucol, a standardized extract of black elderberry, has been found to fight the avian flu virus H5N1, revealed British researchers last week.
A team at Retroscreen Virology, an institute associated with the University of London, said that the extract was at least 99 per cent effective against the H5N1 virus and significantly neutralized the infectivity of the virus in cell cultures..."
"...the work was done by Dr John Oxford, a reputable specialist in flu..."

If you wonder why you never get advised by the government health authorities in the UK, then its worth knowing that government drug regulators (the MHRA) who's job is SUPPOSED to be a watchdog over the drug industry, are not in fact paid by the government. They are 100% paid by the industry making the drugs.
In the United States, the pharmaceutical industry lobby politicians and pay out millions $$$, including a great deal of money to their version of the MHRA (the FDA) and you get the same effect:
No action when there's something natural that works, yet lots of action, and constant media hype of the terrible danger the world MIGHT be in, even though less people have died worldwide of avian flu in total (despite their close contact with birds and lack of hygienic enviromental protection such as a clean running water etc) over the last few years than people who die in ONE DAY in the UK of 'ordinary' flu in mid winter - many of whom had a flu shot as they were considered 'vulnerable'. The purpose is to sell vaccines that are at best not particularly effective. Its all about making a killing in profits.
If that helps explain things a bit?
Elderberry, who'd have thought that nature provided us with something more effective than vaccines and with no side effects, and yet we never get informed of it lol :)

Pregnant women and children and elderly should be the ONLY people getting flu shots, contrary to what the other poster said. The flu shots are limited, first of all and if you are from the age of 15-45 you should be fine without one, don't take one from a baby or an 80 year old. Also, the flu shots they give do not cover the type of flu that the avian flu is, and therefore have no effect on how the flu affects your body. The last avian flu that we had even remotely like this one was the Spanish flu of 1918 that killed several million people. The people that survived that flu are partially immune to the new avian flu. Hope this all helps!

Unfortunately, third world governments have had tremendous problems handling the avian flu problem both in birds and in people.
Part of the problem is lack of money, lack of education, lack of attention to the problem (but frankly many first world country haven’t done very well here either.) There has also been mismanagement, corruption, and spread of misinformation.
Our seasonal flu shots do not give any protection against avian influenza. They usually don’t even give us protection against the next year’s seasonal flu. This is one of the reasons that scientists are so concerned about avian influenza.
But flu shots shouldn’t be limited to pregnant women, children and the elderly. Everyone should get flu shots. They are especially recommended for the above groups, but The Center for Disease Control says that everyone should get them.
People who survived the 1918 flu will not be partially immune to the H5N1 virus when it causes a pandemic. The 1918 virus is somewhat similar to H5N1 and causes similar symptoms, but there will no immunity for people who lived through the 1918 pandemic.
The 1918 pandemic killed between 50 million and 100 million people worldwide.
The H5N1 has spread from person to person on a limited basis and the virus needs only one mutation to pass easily from person to person. Because people are contagious before they have symptoms, the disease will spread quickly.
Right now in Indonesia over 80% of people who get infected die.
We won't have vaccine, because vaccine can't be produced until the virus mutates and then it will take 6-9 months produce. Anti-viral medications are in very short supply and the virus has become resistant to some of our antivirals.

Probably not. Because they are 3rd world countries which mean they dont have much money or dont have a proper government in place. The only way to protect yourself is to get a regular flu shot (different virus but if you ever caught avian flu, the vaccine for the other flu might cause you only to have a mild infection and not die like people who didnt get a flu shot) every flu season, if you can get one from your doctor. Especially pregnant women and children and the elderly.
