It depends on the plane. On a typical jet flying between two hubs, such as a super 80 or a 737, a small to medium-sized carry-on will work. You will have to check larger bags such as a suitcase or garment bag. For women, your purse counts as one carry on item, so don't plan to bring it AND two bags, or you will be asked to check one of them.

For smaller commuter aircraft, only the smallest carryons will fit, or a computer bag or large purse. Also, be aware that anything larger than a computer bag or briefcase will have to be "gate-checked", meaning you can claim the luggage as you get off the plane, as opposed to baggage claim.

Put all your toiletries in a 1-quart ziplog bag (NOT one gallon) and make sure nothing that you carry has more than 3 oz. of liquid or paste. Trial-size toothpase is OK if it's in the ziplog bag, for instance, but your bottle of Evian is a no-no, and your home-sized hair spray is a no-no.

I hope this helps.

It may vary with each airline. The one I just checked was 10"X16"X24". I also get one "personal item" such as purse, laptop carrier,or small backpack.
