I have never heard that a scabby cere means that they are going to lay. If the scab is bloody and red it very well could be from an injury. Usually on parakeets it is a sign of something else. I had a parakeet a few years back his cere was flakey and scabby, I took him to my avian vet who told me that it was a sign of a bigger problem, It turns out that he had (don't laugh) testicular cancer. Now when I first heard that I almost told him to jump off of a bridge hehehehe. 2 or 3 years went by and my little buddy did pass away. I took him to the vet to have a necropsy (an autopsy for animals) and what did they find but the cancer. He lived a happy health life all the way to the end and he never skipped a beat. I would take your little one in to an avian vet, just to get a once over.

A scabby nose does not mean it is going to start laying eggs. A scabby nose either it has injuried its nose on the wires of the cage or it might have some nose discharge from a health reason. If it was a health related probably have showed up in a bigger way by now. I suggest some one was "pulling your leg".

A female in breeding condition will havea rough looking cere, but I wouldn't say scabby. If it is irregular at all, or seems to be changing in size and/or shape, the bird probably has mites. Don't bother using oil. It is ineffective and can be dangerous! Look for a product called SCATT. You can probably purchase it from a quality pet store, but you can definitly get it from an online bird store. It works very well, and is inexpensive.

I would definatly say mites. However, I would not self treat as mites are often both external and internal on birds. A common vet perscribed medication is called Ivomectrin. It is a paracite killer that gets rid of mites, lice, ear mites, and worms. It is one of the main ingrediants in heart wormer (along with pyrantal). It is given to dogs and cats for ear mites, and given as an injection to farm animals. You need to go to the vet to get it in most places, however, if you live near the sticks, check your local feed or tractor store. they sell all kinds of animal basic meds such as Ivomec, aureomycin, terramycin, tetracycline, eythromycin....

if you can get Ivomectrin and are desprate for treatment, give 1 drop on the back between the wings every ten days for 30 days (3 treatments) if you do not see improvement within the first 10 days, definatly seek vets advice. I do not recommend self treatment and diagnosis as it is very easy to misdiagnose and mismedicate a pet. However, if it is your only option, then this is what will kick the mites. It will not harm the bird in that dose if she does not have mites.

it takes a couple of months for a bird to lay there eggs. They usally only start breeding if they have a mate and they mated

If you have a parrot (cockatiel, parrakeet) the area around the nosrils turns a darker brown when they are ready to mate.

If the area looks scaley you might have a scaley mite. The treatment is a little oil to coat the area and kill the mites. Dont cover the birds nostrils.

doesnt necessarily mean that it WILL lay eggs, usually it means that your bird is in breeding mode, thats all. When a females cear turns brown and flaky, you know its that time, and they want some :))

She also could be old, stressed or it could be to dry. Honestly, I'd check with a vet since it could be more then one thing.
