I know you get a free re-test within 2 weeks or so, but f' that; Am I allowed to fix my car, go to another inspection station, pay again, cross my fingers, and go to a different station? Went to the DPS website, but found nothing helpful !

you might as well try the free re-test after you fix it before you take it to another station to pay again. You might pass the next time after you fix whatever you're fixing.

Those pieces of equipment are finely tuned.
That's like watching a movie twice to see if it ends the same way the 2nd time.
And of course you're allowed to go to the same station.
