Because the Law says so! Dumb questions from a jealous person. We don't make the laws, we arrest those who break them.

Nice to see lots of pro-police answers for a change.
In the UK, the mobile phone legislation doesn't cover radios - so it's not actually illegal for Police Officers to use them whilst driving. They are, however, advised not to unless absolutely necessary. All the Police cars in our force have handsfree kits, but I don't know about the rest of the country.
In case anyone's interested, the £30 fine for using a mobile whilst driving (or in fact using your mobile whilst stopped at traffic lights / queuing traffic) has now been scrapped. It's now £60 and 3 points on your licence.

Well, officers receive training on how to drive and talk on the radio at the same time, especially in pursuits, whilst being able to control the vehicle, etc. A cell phone is very much like a radio in this sense.

Because the police are above the law. There are other people that are experienced drivers, taxi drivers truck drivers etc that are far better & more experienced drivers than the police, I have seen police officers driving using mobile phones & radios while the policeman in the passenger seat is doing anything, would it not make sense for the drivers passenger to use the radio or phone? Its plainly one law for us & another for them

Lets hope then when I'm out on patrol and your 'needs' come up, I have the time to pull over and take the message, or would u rather I get there quicker ?, Radios are not the same as mobile because you dont have to look and dial, just press and go, theres a big difference, and calls are pretty quick, unlike some dickheads trying to ring boyfriends/girlfreinds, pledging undying love and BANG !!!!!

officers go through hours of vehicular training. in all these the use of the radio is included. also using a radio is so much easier then a cell phone. theres no dialing, no hanging up, one button to push.

It really is a shock to see so many sensible and positive answers. The answer was obvious to anyone with half a brain but usually a question mentioning police draws in rubbish answers. It is intresting this question does noy mention the fire or ambulance service who do the same things but dont get the same slagging.

For the same reason that they can park in a no parking zone....exceed the speed limit....go thru red lights or carry concealed weapons.....They do it in the performance of their official duties.
Can you imagine a world where cops had to pull over and legally park anytime they had to use the radio? Where they couldn't hurry to calls where someones life was in danger?
I for one have no problem with cops using the radio as they drive.

They are trained in driving safely under these circumstances. The general public is not. Heck, most of the general public can't drive with 2 hands on the wheel let alone while being distracted.

Because baning cell phones has NOTHING to do with safety. If using one have for something other than driving was actually believed to be dangerous, fast food drive thru windows would the the first thing to be baned.
