Is the American/Western media simply ignoring them or is there really a shortage of such protesters?

"I have heard such protesters, but alas not very many. I don't think it would do much good anyway. Extremists will always kill"
True, but you would think that the majority of Muslims would want to be made pretty publicly clear that they don't support terrorism.
Then again, even the Pope was silent during the Holocaust.

I have heard them speak out, and a number of clerics in the U.S. have turned in people to the DHS who seem to have the same ideals as terrorists.
My guess is that either the media outlets you are patronizing are not focusing on it (either because of the area's ideology, or because good news doesn't sell commercial space), or that you just missed them. With a quick Yahoo! search, I found the below articles...among many, many others. (I also found on the same search someone claiming the fatwahs were "fake"...)

There are many that spoke against terrorism in my country and neighbouring countries. There has been numerous that was mentioned in the paper if only you bother to read them. Also, at the mosque or a Muslim congregation, you can hear them speaking against it.
Fatwas are needed when something which is ambiguous in Islam. As for terrorism, there are clear warnings about killing innocent people, damaging of properties including suicide(in this case suicide bombing). They are among the greatest sins in Islam. Terrorism is cause by some crazy leaders who manipulate the interpretation of the Quran for his own gains.

like u said it is because of the media.
They choose to ignore the fact that there are people against terrorism because that just wouldn't be interesting to the public and it would basically be going against the government.
Also yes there could be fatwas (as you know them) but it's pretty hard to put a fatwa on anyone who's blown themselves up. Once they have killed themselves there is really no way of punishing them according to Islamic law or any law for that matter. It's just impossible.

The former president of Iran, Khatmai, did talk against terrorism. Lots of others did, but I don't remember their names.
About 20-30 million Muslims live in Tehran, Iran. Most of them got together in huge crowds and held moments of silence and candles for the victims of 9/11 attacks.

The Religious Reich has a strong hold over what we are and are not told. I have seen broadcasts from other countries (mainly the UK and Australia) where the Islamic clerics are calling for peace.

Because Islamic clerics preaching peace doesn't make for good inflammatory news items or shocking headlines.
The mainstream media ignores everything unless it can run it with 72 point font and fifteen exclamation marks.

I can't really say, though I do know that it's not a very large percentage of the eastern region that are really for terrorism. We hear about it all the time, and group all those people together, that we don't realize that it's NOT the common person terrorizing us and other people.

I think there is a distinct shortage of those voices. I'm starting to doubt that there is a silent Moderate Islamic majority.
