Larger than most jobs but it still isn't the most dangerous job out there. Fishing and lumber work are more dangerous.

A lot better chance of dying on any major highway in US.
In 2005, there were 16,692 & in 2006 more than 16,000 murders
in the US, so you care 10 times more likelt to be violently murdered at you local mall or home than in the military. 32,000 were murdered in 2 years in US compared to 3,300 the entire war. The death rate is extremely low considering the job.
The figures of deaths divided by number of soldiers does not work since soldiers deploy in & out & the deaths are over 3 years.
The percentage is really low.

We as Americans need to take the statistics presented by Conservative and Liberal think tanks with a grain of salt. While it is true that more people die on American roads every year than in Iraq, we have over 200 million drivers in America and 140,000 troops in Iraq. Do the math. We are not seeing very many KIA's in Iraq because of improved body armor since Vietnam. Iraq has more attacks on a daily basis than we did in Vietnam but the simple fact is that the engagements are immediate bombings and not long drawn out attacks. Plus, we are able to get wounded troops to comabt support hospitals or CSH's very quickly whereas they would have died in en route while in Vietnam or WW2. The percentage of wounded and amputees is very high compared with previous wars because our soldiers have a better chance of surviving their injuries.
We need to stop comparing Iraq to Washington D.C and other metropolitan areas for murder!!!! Washington DC had 195 murders in 2005. I watched over 800 troops die in Iraq in 2004!!!! Washington DC has a total population of just under 600,000 and we have 140,000 in Iraq. Do the Math!!!
Point being, it is virtually impossible to compare death tolls across demographic lines when you are speaking about a war that most people are completely oblivious about. I served a year in Iraq and it is ******* dangerous!!!!!!

The best way to ask this type of Questions is that:
Whether or not military would allow to enjoy your life?
After many years service I would say the Negative...I lost my life as soon as I joined to military...I was always considered as Dead man...even I was breathing.
Yet the answer to your question is that where you have chance of service...if you get a job in the office or in the base there is no chance death due to job...if you join in dangerous jobs like pilot there would be about %30 chance to die...and if you join to War...the chance will increase...as the US enemy be stronger...yet depend to number of US troops...higher troops less chance about %40...

You have a much higher chance of being murdered in most American cities than a soldier fighting in Iraq. Look at the statistics for Phoenix or Washington D.C. they are the worst in the country.

for the American military in Iraq its quite easy to figure; 100,000 to 120,000 troops, about 3000 deaths and 15,000 serious causalities. Divide the number dead by the total number gives you the chances of dying expressed as a percentage. Its about a 2.5 to 3% chance of dying and 12.5 to 15% chance of serious injury
