What motivates mankind to take a peaceful institution, such as religion and use it to torture, persecute, and murder other human beings?

It'd probably be worse without Religion. Religion stops a lot of sane people from doing bad things to others. It gives us a reason to do good while we are here.

It would be the same.
Some people love violence. It makes them feel important - provides a sense of self-actualization. Some of us are poets, painters, dreamers and doctors.... Then others are warlords, corrupted politicians, despots, mercenaries, soldiers, generals and colonels.
Thieves, murderers, felons and the like.
It's part of the spectrum which is the earth experience.
If we got rid of religion - there would be a lot more intelligent people devoting time to science. But half of them would be inventing new sh^t to blow ourselves up with.

That is not true people will fight no matter what. Without religion we would still fight. Violence is in some people's blood they don't care who they hurt or why. So religion is not the cause for violence. 9/11 wasn't the cause of religion it was the cause of george bush. WWI wasn't because of religion religion plays a very small role in violence.

it's our own nature to take beatiful things and twist and pervert them into somthing evil it's not just relegion we take the minerals from teh earth to make guns not braces we say love thy neighbor but hate gay people humans are inherntly wicked as a species
but i do beleive things would be worse with out religion i'm anti-christan but still think the world would be worse of without them and they're hypocritic views but still if they didnt have any fear of god do you know how crazy they'd be? i think for the most pert religon is good unless pressed upon the unwilling whihc is why most of the religous wars happen not becuase of differant gods but becuase the people who follow thier god believe that they can force thier beliefs on others so to sum it up it's not the relegion per se but the people who are untotlerant of others

If it wasn't religion don't u know they would have another excuse.These people will use anything to do what they intend on doing.I don't believe in religion due to all the man made rules.But I do have a relationship with god.I couldn't make it without him. As for religion, it's not something I agree with. Oh my son is a virgin too..More power to you all.

What motivate me to kill people and such thing is from what I see. Ever think why heaven is such a nice place? It's because you never see killing.

it has been going on since the beginning of time...i heard people use it when the beat the crap out of their kids.. spare the rod spoil the child.. when i was comming up there was a woman who went to church ever time the doors open.. yet she would break brushes on the tail of her two daughters.. ages 2 and 3

The blame is not religion it is the people the use it against others. No Religion teaches violence against your fellow man.

people want control and they will do anything they can to get power over others --- and religion is just an excuse --- if there were no religion it would be something else
