I recently dyed my hair a dark brown, but it came out black. I only dyed it to even out the brownish and blonde tones from an old dye job. I want my natural medium brown color back. I am thinking about dying my now black hair a very light brown. It says on the box that it will dye black hair to a dark brown, but I'm not too sure. I think that if I use this color and get a dark brown that in a week or two I can go even lighter, back to it's origional color. It's been 4 days since I dyed my hair. It's a semi permenant black, but hasn't faded, despite efforts (washing with dawn, bleach water, special shampoos). Should I just do it myself? I have no money to go to a salon anytime soon, and I absolutely DISPISE the black. I'm not goth and I look it :(

DON"T DO IT. I have the same problem with hair dye. Wait a couple days then try L'oreal Preferance. It will come out only a shade or 2 darker then it will end up. After about 3 washes it's the EXACT color on the box :)

If a salon is not a option. Then stop now while your ahead. If your hair came out black then using a lighter dye will do nothing to the color and may do damage to the hair. The box is referring to naturally black hair not dyed hair. All you can really do is wait and see if the black will fade any on it's own. Then go from there.

If the black color does not fade you can let it grow out or you will have to strip it out with bleach. You definitely do not want to attempt to strip your hair on your own. It is very difficult to do properly and easy to make yourself look like a calico or do major damage to the hair. Also your hair will probably need dyed after the stripping to cover the uneven color.

So overall I say leave it alone.

Ok, you need to wait two weeks, minimum, before applying another permanent hair color and PLEASE never use dawn or bleach water on your head again! Your hair is probably very damaged from all you;ve done, so I suggest you wash and deep condition it at least two times in the next two weeks. You really should go to a pro to get your color done, but what you can do is get a permanent color two shades darker than what you want and then add a small amount of lightener to the dye mix, so get a deep, rich brown and the lightener will give you a medium brown color.

I had the same accident. I'm pale so I looked like an oreo. ug.
I read this hair dye stuff that said it would dye medium brown over black. but it didn't work. It slightly made it darker. When dying a lighter shade over black it rarely ever works out unless bleach is included into the dye. I had to bleach my hair to get it back to brown again. Just one quick job with not too much bleach. It didn't harm my hair, and now I have my brown hair again.

Hi, Same thing happened to me but I quite liked the goth look! Your best bet is to get some colour remover from the chemist (they sell it at Boots) and use that then the brown hair dye you have. If you just use the brown straight on the black it probably won't lighten it that much cos it's meant to be used on natural colours. If you cant get the colour remover just get some hair bleach and leave it on till the hair lightens a little bit then use the dye. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I dye my hair ALOT!!! Believe me the it will fade iv been black a couple of times before (i am at the moment) and it will fade trust me. Just because you have balck hair does not make you goth, i am far from goth and kinda like the black look. Let your hair calm down a bit first as dying over is bad! Enjoy your new look for now!

Dear Candita... I should wait for 3 or 4 days and wash your hair a couple of times before you put the new color on. (Usually the package of the coloring says how much time you should wait) That way it won't interact with the other color you put on. Though, if you dye your hair in a darker color, normally there won't be any difficulties. The longer you wait, the less you will damage your hair.

If it is a semi permanent color, you have to give it some time to fade. Having said that, I suggest that you leave it alone for now and then color it again. I also suggest that you use Loreal Excellence because the color on the box is the color that your hair will turn out to be. Good Luck!

I've had this problem -- whatever you do, if you're going to dye over it, do it soon. I waited too long and when I did, my roots came out bright red -- the rest of my hair was a normal brownish red. Two things I remember they told me to try to lessen the semi-permanent color was baby shampoo.

Try lemon juice it lightens your hair, alos leave it for a week or two and the colour will fade and then dye over it if you wish, but I would have thought brown over black will just make the colour darker.
