People used to working with a particular breed of dog can make a pretty good visual judgment if a dog is purebred. It doesn't always work both ways... a dog can be purebred and not *appear* purebred, but it is often the case that a dog that appears purebred probably is.

Unfortunately, just knowing a dog is purebred doesn't help you out with getting papers. "Papers" don't just prove a dog is purebred; they also describe the dogs pedigree, or his family tree. If you are going to breed a dog, it is advised that you know something about his family history. If you breed a purebred dog without knowing anything about the traits that are common to that breed, and more importantly, the traits that are common to that dog's lineage, you are setting up a lot of families for heartbreak if you create a bunch of puppies that have genetically preventable health problems down the road. "Pure bred" is a mild form of inbreeding, and if you breed genetically similar dogs to genetically similar dogs, you double up on common health problems and make them extremely likely to surface, which is why purebred dogs get a bad rap for being less healthy than mutts. In all honesty, you'd be safer breeder two random mutts to each other.

Instead of studding him out, you might consider neutering in order to reduce all of the humping. If there are special qualities about your dog, particularly around his health and his temperament, that *might* be a justification to breed him, but an enjoyment of humping things isn't a great reason to create new little lives in a world of overpopulated pets.

To the other poster: Jack Russell Terriers are not an AKC breed. AKC doesn't own the patent on determining if a dog is a valid breed -- they only recognize about 150 of hundreds of dog breeds worldwide, and there are very legitimate reasons for a breed club not to pursue AKC recognition.

go to www. akc. org and look up Jack Russell terriers, they have several name categories and qualifications and none of them match the name Jack Russell, but it will give you a good idea of what to look for if your dog is a purebred, and just because they dont have any papers doesnt mean they are not purebred. hope this helps.

No you can't get papers on him from any legit registry.Without papers from a legit registry and from a responsible breeder then there is no way of knowing 100% for sure he is purebred even though he may look it.
He should be neutered. He'll be a lot healthier and happier for it.
