Recently I have been getting a lot of split ends. I usually have healthy, shiny hair but that has been changing. Now I spend my time in class searching for split ends. I made an appointment to get a trim, but I was wondering, how on earth did I get them? I don't ever blow dry my hair, I have never dyed it (unless for 1 day for a special event, none recently), I have not had a lot of stress, and I am using regular shampoo/conditioner (vive). It is really cold where I live and I take my doggie on a walk every day. My mom had really bad split ends when she was my age (but she had hair down to her back, I have it halfway down my arms. So is it genes? Or is it vitamin deficency? My nails actually look pretty healthy, strong, not brittle. Also, if it helps, my hair always gets super staticy, which attracts particales of dust, so I often find dust bits in my hair. Any way to get rid of those?

Please only answer if you have a source, not a hunch!

Once hair gets past shoulder length, it's older because it's been around longer, and is naturally more fragile. Do you use a brush, or a comb? Brushing can damage hair over time, because it creates friction. It's better to use a wide-toothed comb instead. If your hair falls on your back & you wear it down a lot, it may be catching and rubbing on your clothing, or being rubbed against rough surfaces as you sit with your back against chairs or couches. Wearing it up more often and handling it less will help (friction, again). But only use hair clips and toys that don't have sharp edges or springs located where they may catch & fray your hair, and elastics that are 'snag-free' (no metal parts). Using the wrong hair clips or ties can damage hair & contribute to splits. Sunlight also damages hair - if you're out in the sun a lot, cover it up with a smooth scarf or hat. Try using a satin pillowcase or night cap to cut down on friction on your hair at night. Also, avoid using caps or hats made of rough fabric - if you must, wear a satin scarf underneath to protect your hair.

Split ends may be happening because your hair is less healthy - if you went on a crash diet a couple of years ago that may have affected the health of your hair that is at the ends now. Make eating a healthy diet a priority, and the positive effects will eventually show up in your hair. Sometimes thyroid issues can cause fragile hair - if you're gaining or losing weight for no reason, talk to your doctor.

Also, could it be possible that you've had them for a while and are just now noticing it? When the light is just right, I see split ends sometimes that I never noticed before...which usually triggers me to go & get a trim.

know matter how much you hair looks feels healthy if it has split ends its not you need a very good trim and blow dry your hair either way it damages your hair so just blow dry it, keep your hair clean and brush it, split ends are old non healthy strands that split and also massage your scalpe alot, now when i say this actually do it even though it sounds absolutly crazy evoo-the cooking olive oil use that put it on your scalp and massage it for 5 min or so, then leave it on all night (yes do it before bed but put a towel under your head) and wash it out in the morning the evoo will run to the ends of your hair but that is what we want it to do on its own and make sure nothing big is comming up because it willl take a few days to get it out of your hair, believe me it works i got this tip from my hair dresser

It could still be diet. With all the crap in the air and all the junk foods we eat today, no one really knows, but a lot of deficiencies in our bodies is caused by diet. Eat less red meat, more fresh vegetables either raw or steamed. Eat more fresh fruits and drink fresh organic fruit juices. Drink lots(about 6 to 8 bottles) of pure water and walk after school at least two miles every day. Your energy output and vitality will get an enormous boost. Have fun also, and enjoy life.
