Hello everyone,

I've yet to make a decision on a bike, as I've only just begun looking into bikes --but I've got some idea as to what I'll buy. Likely I'm looking at a hardtail (front suspension only), $400.00-$500.00.

First question, for a used bike, is front suspension hardtail the best bang for my buck? I can scale back from my $400.00-500.00 in order to get a better bike at a later time -- remember, I am a beginner and have little experience in the world of mountain biking.

Second question, I have a dilemma, and it has to do with WHERE I'll be purchasing my bike. Right now craigslist (local) and pinkbike.com are looking like my best options; however, all things considered, if these are not the best options, I would CONSIDER ebay -- but I live in Ottawa, Canada... so the shipping fees to here would be exorbitant... much too much to trifle with. Unless there is a short-fix alternative? Am I doomed to shop local?

If your looking for suggestions let me first say don't spend alot of money on your first bike. From experience I can tell you resale on mountain bikes suck. So buy cheap or used until such time as you know you're going to stick with the sport.
Another suggestion would be to stay away from full suspension ( FS )unless your riding downhills, I found you lose alot of power and traction to the back wheel, it creates whats known as wheel hop and if you're riding trails you will be standing on your bike or pedals anyway so it isn't needed. A front suspension hard-tail is the best bang for my buck IMO.
The other thing would be too make sure you get a good front suspension, it can make all the difference in the world to your ride and how you're going to feel at the end of the days ride.

As far as your second question or dilemma, I'd say craigslist would be your best bet, there locally. I just sold to road bikes on that list and I did see several MTBs listed at good prices.

First off, yep get a hard tail. You get more goodies for you money at that price range. You will need to spend a lot more before you get a decent full susser.

Second. The consideration for buying from a dot com is set up. If they assemble, but don't set up, you will need to build this into cost.

Sounds like you want XC, so I would try Giant, as they have the dealer networks. Your other option is E-Bay. Even with postage it is worth it, escpecially buying from US. Your other option is the Canadian Rocky Mountain. Good bikes, but expensive.

What kind of bike are you looking for? Road, MTB? However, about WHERE:

There are many sites on the internet. My friend's brother built his out of parts from many sites. It works, but it costs a bit more. However, you get the parts you want and it's not too difficult. Good luck!
