Questions like this imply that Jehovah's Witnesses are interested in becoming popular, but that is simply not true. The ONLY opinions of ongoing interest to a true Witness are those of Jehovah and Christ Jesus. Those who work to ingratiate themselves with some human or human group are not doing God's will.

(1 Thessalonians 2:4) We speak, as pleasing, not men, but God, who makes proof of our hearts.

(Matthew 6:20,21) Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

These facts about Jehovah's Witnesses are perhaps relevant to this question. The more one compares this Christian religion with others, the more remarkable it is shown to be.

1. Jehovah's Witnesses have no paid clergy. Yet they remain tightly organized with more than 6.7 million active Jehovah's Witness preachers (about 17 million associate themselves with the religion). Even fulltime preachers and workers at their branch offices are unpaid volunteers.

2. There is no elite class among Jehovah's Witnesses. Even the few 'anointed' among them enjoy no special privileges in their congregations on earth. An anointed person (one of those relative few with a heavenly hope) is not elevated above his fellow congregants in any way, and he may not even qualify for appointment as a simple 'deacon' or elder. There are no titles; EVERYONE is addressed as 'brother' or 'sister'.

3. No person benefits economically from the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Even the 8 to 20 men who serve on their Governing Body receive simply room, board, medical care, and reimbursement for certain personal expenses according to the exact same provision as every other branch volunteer.

4. About a hundred men have served on Jehovah's Witnesses' Governing Body committee during the past 125 years or so. The vast majority of them have spent the vast majority of their adult lives volunteering for their organization's purposes, and the vast majority have died faithfully and near-pennilessly while still under their legal 'vow of poverty'.

5. Amazingly, Jehovah's Witnesses did not splinter as a sect from some other religion. Instead, a truly tiny but sincere group of bible students studied only the Scriptures to determine the will of God. Thus their religion remains absolutely independent of and not carrying the sins of Christendom's history, yet carries the authority of Christ's teachings.

6. Despite the distortions of anti-Witnesses, throughout their modern history Jehovah's Witnesses have refused to claim divine inspiration or infallibility for their teachings. They have pointed to the bible (and not any particular translation) as the only inspired infallible means of knowing God's thoughts. For over 125 years, their teachings have been presented as merely the results of sincere bible research by imperfect but godly humans.

Well you stirred a hornet's nest didn't you?:D

Seriously though, I think we Witnesses are the same as other people. We are immperfect humans trying to do what we feel is right. We try to follow the Bible. Because of this people make fun of us and make up hurtful, and often rediculous lies about us. Normaly I go through the other answers and try to correct the missimpressions about our beliefs given as answers here but I think I would be here all day at this point.

I doubt most of the ones who answer about us with varying acussations even try to know/understand what we believe or why. Case in point the person who complained about a Witness family choosing who their son associated with. If the family decided not to let the boys play together and was not a Witness, it is doubtful a big deal would be made. Once beliefs become a factor people get their feelings hurt.

Are we sinless?? NO Do we make mistakes?? YES Do we try to correct our mistakes?? YES

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!

Salvation does not automatically mean heaven. We believe salvation is for EVERYONE - not just 144,000. I have no interest in heaven but hope to live in paradise on earth. Where would Adam and Eve be now if they hadn't sinned? On earth. Obviously eternal life on paradise earth was Jehovah's original purpose for us all and why would he change his purpose just because of their foolishness?

Salvation is only by the GRACE of God. We realize that. But faith without WORKS is dead. Why not show our appreciation for the undeserved kindness of Jehovah and Jesus by OBEYING the COMMAND at Matthew 28:19, 20. Don't accuse us of trying to earn our way to salvation. We are imperfect and do not deserve it and we KNOW IT. Nothing could earn it for us.

WE DO NOT TITHE. No one in this organization (besides my spouse) has any idea how much I make at work.

If we were a cult, we would follow a man. CT Russell was NOT a Jehovah's Witness and never even heard of us. As an "International Bible Student", he was certainly on the right track though. Cults do not integrate in society. We all have jobs and lead normal lives. We do not separate ourselves. Not a cult.

If I were to believe in God I would consider first the Jehova Witnesses because I have seen first hand how they behave under great duress.
I was drafted by the Communist army in Cuba and in the same group there were 2 JW's and they were brought in front of 300 recruits and were ridiculed in many ways and their manhood was even questioned (which in Cuba not having it is the worst insult) but they stuck to their conviction that they would not bear arms and would not wear an uniform or salute the flag.
I admired them because I hated being drafted and serving in a communist army and I wished that many other people would have done something similar for political reasons. I considered them very brave cause they were sentenced to 3 years in prison and may end up spending even more. The communist gov. would send them to life among common criminals in jail. I hope they survived.

The Jehovah's Witnesses have the true religion.
All you people who answered thank you again for proving that we are the only true disciples of Jesus.
"If YOU were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because YOU are no part of the world, but I have chosen YOU out of the world, on this account THE WORLD HATES YOU." - John 15:19

The only JW I ever knew was one heck of a nice person. What little I know about their theology is, well, I beg to differ with it.

I do think that their door-knocking style of evangelism is mistakenly attributed to Christian groups, so they've given us a bit of a black eye in that department. On the other hand, lumping us all together doesn't show a lot of understanding anyhow.

A JW family lives across the street from me and has for 9 years. Nice kids. The parents *seem* nice, on the surface. But they are very standoffish. They don't let their kids play with neighbor kids, etc. It's a very creepy vibe. Even the people next door to them - their son is super good, straight-A's and ended up in Harvard. But they wouldn't let their son play tennis with him even.

Other than this family, I don't know many. I taught at a school that had several families. One did a report on the holocaust with *only* "Watchtower" as her reference. It's that thing again---where they seem kind of "closed" to anything that's not strictly JW related.

I have met many that are quite nice and well meaning.

Sincerity doesn't equal truth though. Personally, I believe they are mislead - and it saddens me that this has happened. I believe they miss a lot out of life because of mistruths.

When I was a Christian - it was this that really got me:

(quoted directly from the JW website)

John 3:1-2

1 In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god. 2 This one was in [the] beginning with God.

In other bibical translation 'a god' is translated as 'God'. Not as one of many but part of the same everlasting God. It is implies that there are more then one God, at varies points in time in history - Jesus just happened to be from beginning.

This is just one of the more glaring of the subtle lies that entrap Jehovah Witnesses. I am not a Christian, but I would like them to see a more clear picture of the truth.

Their Nice People

2007-02-15 10:04:47 · answer #9 · answered by Royal Racer Hell=Grave © 7 · 6 2

Well, some are nice, but some act like pest. They come to my subdivision and they knock at your door every Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 a.m. And in summertime I can't even get out my house in weekends because they besiege me. They are very persistent people. I don't know why they comeback if I say always the same, sometimes I'll go to the mirror and I look to my face thinking: Hum, maybe they see something in my face, because every time that they come I put such an ugly face that they think that I'm possessed.
