I just accepted an assignment to Landstuhl, I guess this is near Ramstien. Have you been there or heard anything about it??

We're stationed about 3 1/2 hours from Landstuhl, but I've been there and it's gorgeous country. You'll also be less than an hour from France, so if you have a list of countries to check off your list, that one will be easy. The air base is right there and is pretty nice, they have a Chili's restaurant that we drive down to go to once in a while. They also have a Hooters somewhere down there (I think on the economy), so you might be right at home. :)

The great thing about being here is it's so easy to travel to so many places. If you're at all interested in history, there are castles and ruins sprinkled EVERYwhere across the countryside. When you get there, look up a little French town called Bitche (no lie), it's not far across the border and they have a well-preserved citadel on the hill above the town. We were too late to take the tour inside, but the views of the surrounding country were beautiful. Also, while you're there, if you like beer, make the trek to Kreuzberg (Klosterkreuzberg on the map below). Find a good German road map and it'll take you right there, it'll probably be marked on the map as a scenic overlook. It'll be a drive for you all the way from Landstuhl, but make a day trip out of it. There's a monestary up on a hill there that makes (what I'm told because I don't drink beer) some of the best beer you'll ever find.

I live in Illesheim right now. Kinda close to Landstuhl. Illesheim is practically the smallest post here and I enjoy it, so Landstuhl can't be so bad. There are tons of fun things to do here. I'm supposed to be in Garmisch snowboarding right now, but the weather is too warm. Instead we're taking a road trip to check out new places. It's a good experience and I think you'll enjoy it.

Germany... ah to be back, I go in Oktober this year to the O'Fest in München (Munich to Americans). A few notes, don't be surprised to see dogs everywhere (well behaved ones) they can go in banks, shopping malls, etc.
Everything basically is clean and orderly, dirt is the average Germans enemy. Some of them are anti-American, but some of the people here are anti-military so just watch out for them.
Most people speak some English, but learn some German just for fun. Stores close early due to the old laws about that, just gotta get used to it. Convenience stores are about the only game in town late at night, or restaurants.
Some things to avoid: calling someone's Mercedes or Porsche a Volkswagen.. ha ha. Also, be very nice to the Polizei there if you deal with them, they do not play (my best friend is a Police Sergeant in Munich).
Enjoy your time there, I can't wait to get back.

I was stationed near there for a little over two years, Germany was great!!! 1992-1995 (not the whole three years) As an 18, when I got there, single guy in the ARMY I don't think I could've had a better time! If you are social at all you will enjoy yourself
