All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I can see avg has been mentioned so will leave that one.Personally at the minute i am using anti vir personal edition which is also a free one you can find on the internet. When i first got my pc i started with norton and since i got rid of this and changed to anti vir my pc has been running faster. You do get daily updates or can start the updater yourself whenever you wish.

I would also recomend spyware terminator to run along side this as this is also free and a good little program to have to get rid of spyware, adware and all that. When i had my norton antivirus this even picked up on some viruses norton didn't even detect.

Get the AOL Active Virus Shield but dont be worried as its AOL as its actually make by Kaspersky and has got the second best detection rate of all the anti viruses and its free just search goolge. AVG Free also good is even better than most paid anti viruses at its detection rate.

If you allready have them theres a program called STINGER!
It stands independant and kicks *** for a little program!
I think its by Mcafee but its a tidy little toy that fits on a small flash drive!

Isn't it racism if you discriminate against trojans ?
