I am pretty sure I know the talk you are referring to...what you need to remember is that Brigham did the best with what he knew. We don't believe Adam is God. We believe Adam - who was Michael - helped in the creation of the world, that he was present with Christ during the creation. We believe Adam was the first man created on this earth and that we are all his "children" because he was the first "father"...hopefully that makes some sense to you. And like you said, it was more of a "theory", not official church doctrine.

South Park does the best job of explaining Mormonism of anything I have ever seen. The religion is obviously a scam, yet there are a lot of really nice Mormons. Don't bother yourself too much on learning about Mormonism, because history makes it quite clear what Joseph Smith was trying to do.

If you're still interested, though, Wikipedia has an abundance of information on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam-God_theory#Young.27s_Adam-God_Teaching
