Are they trained to do that? They always seem to get the timing just right!

Because they know the answer will be yes.

If the food were not in your mouth it would not be OK.

To get you to answer yes (the food is OK) is part of the solicitation process in order to reinforce your perceived obligation to give a tip, (waiter does more than necessary by checking on you and you feel obligated to give reward)

It really makes me angry too.

If you are hardy enough try answering " I don't like to be disturbed while I am eating, if there is a problem with the food be sure that you will be the first to know", then the waiter will get the message that you will not be so generous.

Only problem with this approach is that the waiter might spit or pee in your second course by way of revenge!

What infuriates me even more is when eating in a burger restaurant and you get some bozo sweeping or mopping the floor and wiping over your toes whilst you are seated and eating.
They must be trained to do that to get you out of the restaurant as fast as possible.
Good Luck.

Most of them probably don't mean to. As a former waitress, I would be serving people here, giving out checks there, refilling drinks over there, and when I walk by a table who has their food, I might ask them how it is right then, so as not to make them wait longer if something is not right. Also, your waiter isn't always the person who brings you your food and they might not know that you JUST got it, they just see you with food and want to make sure you like it. P.S. If you don't like it most restaurants will get you something else free of charge, it's not a scam to make you eat horrible food... I also eat at restaurants A LOT and have lots of customer experience...

The general rule of thumb is that you should check back with your table after 2 minutes or 2 bites (whichever comes first) to make sure that everything is OK and that they don't need anything else.

It may look like they are coming only when you have food in your mouth, but it's not planned that way. Rejoice when this happens! It means your server knows what he/she is doing!!

They do that because (I think) if there's something wrong you are
not at liberty to say because your mouth is full and it's not proper
adequate to speak with food in your mouth, therefore you have
no alternative but to nod your head up & down, and they're off the
hook. A few times it's happened to me so I just raised my finger
so he HAD to WAIT, like a waiter is supposed to, and kindly asked him for some more water please. And continued my meal!

It seems like that happens a lot.

Next time the server asks about your food when your mouth is full, make gagging noises if you don't like the food and give a thumbs-up if you do. Works for me!

Because they have to ask after you've tried it so that if you complain they don't have to give you a refund. Its probably quite difficult to time it so that no one on the table has a mouth full of food but sometimes they do seem to ask way too quickly.

Well you need to taste it before you can answer if it is good. If you can't speak with your mouth full, use your thumb and index finger to make an okay sign or a thumbs up sign.

I'm not sure...but I hate being interupted during a conversation/meal!They should wait until they bring the check...at least that way there's a good reason to interrupt me.

It always seems that way to me. I'm sure it's because it's much harder to complain when your mouth is full.
